Hi-  I have decided to have my resurfacing done with Dr. Gross in South Carolina.  I am waiting to schedule right now.  I'm curious of those with cormet devices how you made the decision.  Truth be told I do think that the uncemented may work better in the long run but I am nervous.  How did you cormet hippies come to your decision?  Thanks for your input.  Al.

Al,

Glad to hear that you're going to be a Gross hippie.  On that schedule, try to make sure to get an early surgery if you can, maybe the 7:30 or 9:30AM time slot if possible.

You'll like Dr. Gross's crew and the hospital folks treat you like a rock star.

I too believe the uncemented option is the way to go, especially considering how cement can crack over time and if you can get the ingrowth of bone it seems like it will be more natural.... think of it this way, total hip revision surgeries are difficult because of the way the bone grows around the post.  Dr. Gross at this point in time seems to think that both options are about equal, whether cementless ends up being better will only be proven by time.

Is Dr. Gross going to use a Comet or Biomet?

I can honestly say I was clueless to all the options I had. I was just totally happy that I didn't have to have a huge incision and long rod drilled into my thigh that would limit me to certain activities. Having a Dr. that has preformed over 1500 procedures was good enough for me to let him decide. ALL of Dr. Gross' patients seem to be happy with there choice and so am I.

Good Luck!

I'm a Happy Hippy x 2. Get it done, you will be glad you did. You are going to the right place.

I'm still a little sore, but getting better all the time. I can acually put my ankles on the opposite knee and put on my socks. I have not been able to do that in two years. I can play golf, and the list keeps growing.

I wanted to reply to your original question, by I want to preface by saying that I believe that good and valid arguments can be made for all of the components out there, so I hope that this does not start a contest about which is best, but just answers your question about why some of us chose the Biomet.
1. The cementless option, with both the plasma spray titanium and the hydroxyapitite coatings to encourage bone growth.
2. No heat treatment, which leaves a better carbide structure, which some argue will allow for less wear.
3. A more spherical internal geometry in the femoral component, which Biomet argues leads to better load distribution to the femoral head.
4. A non-tapered stem to avoid any loading onto the stem.
5. Dr. Gross seems to be fairly research oriented, has the experience to use any brand, and is choosing the Biomet.
Anyway, those were my reasons, and luckily they all lead to the same place. :)
