Hello I am a 58 year old male and had my right hip re-surfaced Tues march 2nd (I live north of Toronto Ontario). Everything went great home same day managed pain with meds (now off all pain meds) and Game ready Ice machine (what a fantastic product. I have my first physiology appointment this Tuesday March 16th ands see my surgeon March 17th to get staples out. I have been following my at home physio exercises and feel I have good mobility using a walker outside and cane around the house. My question is regarding the use of cane vs crutches when transitioning off walker and what others experiences are in the early post op weeks? Reading on-line it seems most recommendations are to use crutches vs a cane but until I see my physio wanted to get other patient experiences advice. Thanks!

Congrats and welcome to the other side.  I had my second surgery on Feb 10th so I'm a little ahead of you.  I went from the walker to one crutch but only used that for a day or two and went to the cane.  There isn't a need to rush things I would recommend doing what you feel comfortable doing.  The joint is weight bearing so you're not going to disrupt that.  If you do too much you will aggravate the soft tissue around the joint which will be sore for a few days.

Thanks for the message and advice much appreciated.

Some have a preference for one over the other. I say use what makes you most comfortable. I don't care for crutches, so I prefer a cane. Others are the opposite. Canes can be a bit tricky in that standard canes can slip easily, although the 4 pronged bottom ones don't.
