Hello all fellow hippies,

I had my left hip resurfacing done a bit over a week ago (Nov 19). Everything’s going well considering. I don’t have too much pain (just soreness at incision site and in quads), weak leg (but worked up to walking 1/4 mile), and it’s really difficult/uncomfortable to sit for any period of time.

I plan on working from home week two (next week), which I think is possible lying down with my laptop (although one of those days I’ll have to simultaneously keep an eye on my 14 month old toddler!). However, week three I was planning to go into office at least one day and work in my office (at desk and sitting down). I’m now doubting that I’ll be able to sit almost all day but this is two weeks from now. Wondering what other people’s experience was with sitting and when they could do so comfortably? Also if you have any toddler/baby proofing ideas, I’m all ears, haha.

I thought I would be able to sit at the desk too.  I found leg circulation issues caused discomfort, it gets better once off blood thinners but still found I didn't have desk stamina for 2 months, driving too.  After about 40min I had to get up walk around and elevate.  I am 4 months out and can sit for 2-3 hours now.  I bought a pair of 20mg support hose but they are difficult to put on, every once in awhile I think to purchase a lighter pressure support hose to see if that helps.

I'm sure I'm different because I was able to put off responsibilities that require me to sit.

Seems to me to be way too early.  I was able to sit at a chair at 2-ish  weeks, sitting on a pillow, in a position that kept my leg less than 90 degrees.  I went back to work for half days at 3 weeks, but still found that I could neither sit, nor stand, for more than maybe 45 minutes.  I have an adjustable desk, so I would sit for 45 minutes, stand for 10 or so, then sit again.  At 4-ish weeks, Sitting was more comfortable, but I still kind-of recline in my desk chair.

I'm on my 5th week and now back to work full time.  I'll still get up every hour and walk around a bit before sitting back down.

I forgot that pumping your feet and heel is helpful for circulation.

Thanks for replies all. I worked something out with work so that I don’t have to go there for another month and a half. My office doesn’t have a standing/sitting desk and my chair doesn’t recline.  So more time to lie down at home should help.

I never thought about a compression stocking or leotard. Did that help you Danny?

the day I took the last post operative blood thinner I went to a vein specialist because I was having some symptoms of deep vein thrombosis.  they said lower leg circulation was poor and suggested I get a vein operation.  I thought it rather severe.  And took the lesser suggestion of getting 20mm.Hg compression socks.  I wore them for only about 2 weeks, but I think the improvement was more so getting off the plavix as my foot swelling and heel bruise went away in less than a handful of days.

I didn't have to sit at my desk, (I'm on my own time) so when I became uncomfortable I laid down iced and  elevated.

Through some research I found that compression hose is rather prevently worn by medical professionals of all ages, they may be on their feet often, but I can't imagine them doing heavy labor.  The 20mm.Hg socks were hard to put on, I bought a stylish pair for about $6 on ebay.  My next purchase will be a lighter compression, Im more apt to wear them.

Patricia Walter the administrator here wrote a piece on equipment she found helpful which included leg hose.
