Hi everyone,

My name is Angela and I am 25 years old.  I have bilateral acetabular protrusio affecting particularly my left hip.  It was diagnosed at 21 years of age but has significantly affected my movement in my left hip - with pretty much 0 degrees internal rotation and little external rotation.  It also has significantly affected hip flexion with advanced osteoarthritis in the left hip.  Both hips also further complicated with femoral acetabular impingement.  2 weeks ago I have just had a left hip arthroscopy which I am yet to see the benefits.  Although, I know it is still early days, I don't see much improvement in my flexibility which really concerns me.  I would much appreciate advice from any medical professionals or someone with a similar situation or condition to please let me know if they have had resurfacing done and how much it has helped.

Thanks,
Angela

Hi Angela

Welcome to Hip Talk.

When people have very difficult hip problems, it is difficult for us members to tell you very much.  We are not trained medically.

I would suggest that you contact some of the really experinced surgeons.  You can email them and send them your x-rays in a digital format as a .jpg   All of the really experienced surgeons will give you a free consultation.  That way you would have good medical information.  A few of the most experienced surgeons that will give you free consultations are:  Dr. Gross in SC, Dr. Mont in MD, Dr. De Smet in Belgium and Dr. Bose in India.  THose are just a few and you can find their email addresses and contact info on my doctors list  http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php

That would give you some really good information.  We want you to keep in touch with us because we like to know how you are doing and how you are going to solve your problems. We are a great support group, but don't give medical advice.

It seems the arthoscopy works for some people and not for others.  I have read about quite a few that went on to hip resurfacing.  Generally once you have a hip resurfacing, you can start to return to a a pretty normal life. Some people recover completely and others are not able to get back complete ROM, etc because their problems were so severe.  You need to ask the doctors about how complete of recovery you should be able to obtain.

Good Luck.
