Hello,
I haven't been on this forum for quite some time.   7 years ago (2017) I had successful surgery done by Dr Gross.  I am female and absolutely no issues.  It looks like soon, I'm going to require hip surgery on my other hip.  I went onto Dr Gross's website and an article dated this past November states he is no longer doing women. I am devesated.  What the heck am I going to do?  Even the Birmingham hip is not done on women now??  I am likely too old for the hip being researched. Am I going to have to have a regular hip replacement on my other leg??

Hi, Claudia!

Are you sure the article wasn’t on the “Myths About Hip Resurfacing” section?  https://grossortho.com/myths-about-resurfacing-and-hip-replacement?start=5

A female friend of ours was just evaluated last month by Dr. Gross and was told she was an excellent candidate for hip resurfacing.  You may want to call his office and check.

I would definitely schedule an appointment with the same doctor who did your other side and talk to him in person.

See https//grossortho.com/implant update.  The Zimmer biomet magnum recap device has been discontinued.  He will now only do BHR’s for men fitted with a 48 mm cap or greater or for women younger than 65 years old that enroll in the trials for the Joint Medica polymotion resurfacing.

Polymotion looks promising.  Can’t believe Zimmer is giving up on a proven implant.  I have a pair of Biomet Magnums.  Hope they honor my 100,000 mile warranty!   :D

Ceramic is done on women too..just different doctor

Just an example what i am able to do 10 months after both hips got ceramic resurfacing by De Smet: https://youtu.be/t6g6YnNjveE?si=NWRWdtRmoSssspqo

Did all those football physics exercises 3-4 times today with full strenght and fast and it felt excellent.

Can highly recommend recerf.. De Smet gives free consultation via email, which means you get straight answer from your xrays whether you are candidate for the operation.

Ceramic was started around 2017-19 and no problems since then, other than bad skills from some other doctors.

Hi Claudia,

If it's any consolation, my Zimmer ceramic/ ceramic THR from 2017,  fitted because the BHR operation failed when my femoral neck broke off, is extremely good and more natural-feeling than my BHR left leg.
I have slightly more range of movement from the THR. I was worried that having a THR would be more limiting, and I don't like the idea of a long spike stuck down my femur, but I have been running, biking, climbing and mountaineering for the last 7 years, running over 7,000 miles and winning age-group races, including my first 3 half-marathons as a V70, with no problems. The ceramic bearing should last forever, and no worries about chrome/cobalt levels in the bloodstream.

Hope this helps,

Pete

Marvin,
Memo on Dr Gross's website states as of Nov 20, Zimmer has discontinued making their implant.  I called the office and this is indeed correct.  It's been discontinued.  For now, Dr Gross is only doing the new trial implant "if" a person qualifies and I do not.

Claudia,  you could check with Dr Su’s office as he also installs the Zimmer Biomet Recap for women.  Maybe they have your size in stock?  Or did Zimmer total withdraw their product in November?

Pete, how did you break your femoral neck, and how long after the BHR surgery did it occur?  Glad you're doing well with the full replacement.

Have you considered Dr. James Pritchett in Seattle? According to his website he is still performing resurfacings on women. He did my right hip in 2016, and the left in 2021. I've never had a problem with either.

fakelord99

Man, that sucks to hear about Dr. Gross and the Birmingham hip changes. I get why you’re freaking outâ€"it’s tough when you had such a good experience and now it feels like the options are shrinking.

Honestly, if it comes down to a regular hip replacement, it’s not the end of the world. They’ve gotten way better, and people bounce back pretty fast with them now.
