Started doing tai chi last week and holding stances for time to strengthen my legs.  New hip feels good for first 1/2 hour then feels a little unstable as it tires.  I mainly do chinese form (kata) training and am happy to "get moving again".  Getting back to working out should help me shed the extra 10 lbs.

I still get a sharp pain if I take a long stride.  Still being careful.

I started back doing very light Tai Chi at about 8 weeks, but like you, I had pain with any long strides. I am now at six months, and that issue is gone, and Tai Chi feels very good. I will occasionally still get a slight click/ shift in the joint on certain turns, but that is getting less all the time. I would highly recommend slow Tai Chi forms to anyone recovering from hip surgery. The slow, focused, weight shifts and turns, really help with awareness, balance, and fluid movement.
