Dr.Scott Ball surface hippy
« on: August 16, 2010, 11:58:34 AM »
Hello everyone.
Had my BHR (right side) installed by DR. Scott Ball and his team at UCSD Med Center Thornton Hospital La Jolla California on 8-9-10.I made my decision to use Dr.Ball mainly through this website and friends and people I have met who have had a BHR installed by him. After suffering a hip injury on my motorcycle when I was 15 and the doctor telling me that it will bother me when I get older( yeah right  remember how invincible we felt at 15 )
The pain started appearing in 2003 and after a very painful winter this past year I was ramping up the meds just to make it through work and my sport activties, and my range of motion was also decreasing that I decided to start the process and prepare for surgery. The only surprise was that I did not know I had a choice of post op pain control, and decided on the epidural over the nerve block and pca. Every day I wake up and feel an improvement over the last. I do get tired very quickly just doing normal activities though, looking forward to recovery very much. Thank you Pat for putting this website together.

Hey Heffenut,
Glad everything went well for you and hope it continues to go well. I am a happy Dr. Ball patient as well. I believe he is an amazing Dr. who truly cares for his patients wellbeing over other things (if you know what I mean). :) :) :)   That said, anyone considering HR surgery should seriously consider him as their surgeon.

I know what you mean about patient well being. Having switched networks from my PCP after 20+ years of care to get in to his network I knew that I had made the right choice during my first consultation with him. Thank you for the kind words. Maybe we can get together at some time when I am recovered. Do you live in town?

Heff :)

Hang in there Heffenut!  It just keeps gettin' better!  I'm at 2 months and (mentally) feel like that invincible 15 year old.  Rehab time is critical...don't rush it.  Like all the folks here told me, your body will definitely let you know when you're ready.  Positive mental attitude and looking forward to pain-free fun will keep you motivated during the inevitable recovery time.  Be sure to do those rehab exercises religiously!

I live in south Orange County   Mission Viejo. For sure it's not that far down there. You will get better and better as time goes on and your strenght will return soon. Keep doing those exercises and get rest when you need. What are your activities you hope to return to? My 2 yr post op date is 11-7-10  and I am glad to report everything is and continues to be fantastic.

I Actually live in San Diego north county. I have familly that lives in Portolla Hills and head up there quite often. Plan on getting back to golf and Mountain Biking, but i think Golf will come first. youre Avatar tells me you love the snow, unfortunatly i left that behind when i left the East Coast 23 years ago but i can relate. I used to snow ski quite often. We can figure something out. Glad to hear you are doing so well, very encouraging. I too am feeling better everyday.

Dr. Ball did my surgery 6/5/09.  Most things are much better than before surgery.  Are you not having any pain at all?  I had some ROM issues, and when I push the range or do extra time at the gym I still have some pain.  I am hoping everything is OK. ???

In reply to Debbie, and to continue the theme of 'it keeps getting better,' I experienced a lot of improvement during my 2nd yr post-op. At approx 1 yr, I experienced a couple painful episodes after pushing physical activity too hard (e.g., going for the sprint win at the end of a long bike ride). Sometime between 1 yr and 1 1/2 yr this went away.
Also, at 1 yr, I mentally gave up hope of playing hockey again. At 2 yr, things just felt that much better that I picked it up again...with no ill effects.
As for ROM, that also improved during 2nd yr.
Good luck!

In reply to Buk10 and Debbie, thank you for reaching out. I am coming up on 4 weeks post op this Monday(labor day) this are going quite well so far I am off pain meds for almost 2 weeks now, and I am using 1 crutch and cane around the house but still use 2
When going on field trips, as per my Physical Therapist. I only get sore after PT and that is only in the muscles the hip is fine. Debbie is you’re pain from the hip or just muscle soreness like mine?
