Hi,
I had LBHR in April 2008.  At that time the right hip was fine.  Now it has also started to deteriorate.  I was just curious about the length of time between surgeries for those of you who have had both hips done, but not at the same time.
Thanks for any information you can give me.

I had my left hip done in June of 2008, and my right hip felt fine until about two years later. I am not quite ready to sign up for the second surgery, but I expect that it will be in the next year or two. Two years seems to be a common time that I have heard for people having trouble with the other hip.

On a slightly different note..
Had problems for years with my Left hip (which was resurfaced earlier this year)and 5 years ago when I had Xrays the right hip also showed OA. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of HR then and the surgeon I saw said I was too young and active and should wait as long as possible for an THR. The six months before my HR surgery the right hip was so bad I thought I'd need a bilateral. My surgeon(Prof Cobb) said that the right was taking a lot of pressure with abnormal loading/angles and that after the op on the left he was optimistic things would improve for the right hip. Well, nine months on, my right hip feels superb, absolutely normal- not a twinge. It feels like now that I'm perfectly aligned it's comfortable performing for itself. I hope your wrong John, I genuinely feel that it's got a new lease of life with years ahead!

ps to those thinking about HR-if you've got trouble with both this is another reason why it's best to get it sorted earlier.

Hey Toby and Gang,
About a year before I had my left hip resurfaced in 06, I had my right one scoped to clean up the torn labrum. It helped as I didn't need my right one resurfaced till almost 4 years later. It all depends on how much cartiladge you've got in your non resurfaced hip. Yep, the resurfacing does help your gait and take pressure off your other hip. But if narrowing is occuring in your other hip, it will only be a matter of time before you need it done. There are a few people I hike, bike and ski with who have had resurfacing and have not had problems with their other hip and its been at least 6 years for them, so it really depends on how that hip is working. I wouldn't worry about it until it really bothers you, if it does at all. There is nothing you can do about it, so go out and have fun. I can tell you that now that I'm a bi-lat (now 5 months on my other hip resurfacing) I'm tooling around really well. Dr. Gross is conservative in his approach, so can't wait to get on my mtn. bike next month. But hiking all over the place with no problem (something I worried about prior to my 2nd surgery) and working out in the gym as before the surgery.
BTW, as I'm taking a self-imposed sabbatical from skiing this winter (Dr. G says no problem to ski, but I'll wait the full year for total bone in-growth of my uncememted new hip) I wish you a great epic skiing winter John. Hope its awesome up there in Ketchum for you. I'm heading down to Scottsdale to mtn. bike McDowell Mtn. Park, golf and hike the Superstitions this winter. Never have been a snowbird, but kind of looking forward.
 Best to all, Shelly Perlmutter

I had a BHR on my left hip in May 2004.   I was told that I'd probably need the right one done in about two years.    After the first op I was very careful with my unoperated hip.    I didn't take up the opportunity to do any light running (after 6 months) and did gentle walking in training shoes, not boots.

It turned into almost four years before I had a BHR on my right hip.   I was in a lot more pain with my left hip than with my right hip.   I probably had the right one done earlier than the left one as I wanted to make sure there was enough left for a BHR and not a THR.

Best wishes

I had my right hip done October 2007 and my left done August 2009. At the time of my first BHR the surgeon said the other hip showed much the same deterioration on the x- rays, but it lasted almost another two years.

Mine disintegrated simultaneously, although the right one was worse. Right one was resurfaced 6/23, left one 10/27. Upward and onward!

Had my left one done 27 months ago and my right one still feels pretty good.  After very hard workouts or all day walking it will twinge a little bit but then doesn't hurt after that.  It was funny to notice that around 22 months my BHR hip became the stronger, more solid hip.  Xrays do show some deterioration in my right hip but I would like to keep it going for as long as possible.

Hi - I had bilateral BHR on October 22, 2010 with Dr. Su.  Both hips wore out pretty evenly and looking at the x-rays, both had even amount of cartridge loss.  I had extreme range of motion problems because of bone spurs so I decided to bite the bullet and do both hips at the same time.  I couldn't see having two operations, two recoveries, and two leave of absences from work so I went for it.  I'm now going into my 5th week post op, and couldn't be happier with my decision.  My recommendation is do them both at the same time and get it over with..............

I might go for the same bi-lat with my hips.  About a year ago I really noticed the problem with my left and now my right hip is starting to get catchy, but the pain isn't as bad in the right.  Even now, the pain isn't so bad in either one such that I feel like I need surgery today, but it will be within a year or so.  I'd say if I don't do them at the same time, then I most likely will have them done within one to 2 years of each other.  That span looks pretty common on this thread.  Might have a lot to do with the nature of the degeneration.  For me its bi-lat FAI/impingement likely due to excees stress on the joints as youngster.  Who knows - but at least I can be proud of a solid cardio-vascular system.   ;)
