Hey Toby and Gang,
About a year before I had my left hip resurfaced in 06, I had my right one scoped to clean up the torn labrum. It helped as I didn't need my right one resurfaced till almost 4 years later. It all depends on how much cartiladge you've got in your non resurfaced hip. Yep, the resurfacing does help your gait and take pressure off your other hip. But if narrowing is occuring in your other hip, it will only be a matter of time before you need it done. There are a few people I hike, bike and ski with who have had resurfacing and have not had problems with their other hip and its been at least 6 years for them, so it really depends on how that hip is working. I wouldn't worry about it until it really bothers you, if it does at all. There is nothing you can do about it, so go out and have fun. I can tell you that now that I'm a bi-lat (now 5 months on my other hip resurfacing) I'm tooling around really well. Dr. Gross is conservative in his approach, so can't wait to get on my mtn. bike next month. But hiking all over the place with no problem (something I worried about prior to my 2nd surgery) and working out in the gym as before the surgery.
BTW, as I'm taking a self-imposed sabbatical from skiing this winter (Dr. G says no problem to ski, but I'll wait the full year for total bone in-growth of my uncememted new hip) I wish you a great epic skiing winter John. Hope its awesome up there in Ketchum for you. I'm heading down to Scottsdale to mtn. bike McDowell Mtn. Park, golf and hike the Superstitions this winter. Never have been a snowbird, but kind of looking forward.
Best to all, Shelly Perlmutter
