First of all, I want to thank Pat for creating this site and all of those who have posted information.  I think I have read almost every post.

I have a very typical story with OA.  I have severe OA in the left hip only with some small early signs in the right.  I suspect that this may go clear back to an ski accident in high school over 30 years ago.  I have been an athlete my whole life, runner, swimmer, wrestler, soccer, cycling, triathlons, and more.  After a car wreck about 10 years ago I was told to stop running.  That is when the OA really started to progress and limit me.

Over the last four years OA has really started limiting my range-of-motion and causing me to limp severely.  I can no longer get aero on the bike.  Even walking or hiking can cause pain and stiffness.  I tried all the usual things, massage, stretching, and strengthening which helped some.

Finally I had my doctor x-ray the hip and knee which verified the OA.  I went to an orthopedic surgeon that said to deal with the pain as long as possible and come see him for a THR when I am ready.  I was very depressed.  Then I started surfing the web and came across hip resurfacing and this website.  I read alot and thought I might be a good candidate.  I was excited and hopeful.  I followed up with my doctor and told him what I found.  He read the notes of the orthopedic doctor who had reported that I was NOT a good candidate for resurfacing.  I was depressed again.

I went ahead and made appointment with Dr. Pritchett in Seattle since he was listed as the most experienced HR surgeon in the NW.  He said I was a great candidate.  So after looking at calendars and deciding what would work with my company and my girlfriend, I have a date.

I will be working out and getting in as good shape as I can prior to surgery.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Although I am excited, I also have the concerns of a major surgery.

Hello from the East coast,
I'll be having my RBHR on April 30 in NYC W/Dr. Su. and I know you'll have a great Surgery because that's my Birthday.....

Hip-o-potimus

Good luck on your upcoming resurfacing.  Getting or staying in shape prior to surgery is a great idea.  The extra strength in the rest of your body will help when the operated leg is weak and needs to heal.  I couldn't do much leg work and couldn't do any cardio but worked on everything else.  I'm going on 10 days post op and being strong in the upper body and non operated leg really helps with day to day activities.

Hello from France. Good to know that you found a surgeon telling that you are a good candidate for HRA. Thats sound much better than THP ! Will have my resurfacing surgery in 4 days.

Hello from France.

Nekko,

When I last asked Dr. De Smet about uncemented C+, he said there was a surgeon in Lille who is using it a lot with good results (but did not mention his name). I gather from your other threads that you will be having surgery in Lille. What device will you be getting? If it is uncemented, there will be interest from many members on this forum.

DGossack -

Congrats and finding a surgeon and setting a date.  I was lucky that my primary doctor knew the difference between THR and BHR â€" he sent me to both for a consult.  I never got past the consult for the BHR, I was  again lucky to call a friend who I knew had both hips replaced, found out he got one done in very early 2000’s and was part of the original BHR FDA trials the other later in 2000’s and he continues to kick ass now.

Prep prior â€" yes get/stay fit, work on your core.  It really seems that going in fit helps getting back up to speed quickly, send a note if you have any specific questions

Cheers - Phill

@Lopsided

My surgeon told me that he could implement a cemented conserve+ or a more recent device called "DynoMoM" which is similar to conserve+ excepted that both components are wrought instead of cast-wrought as it is on C+, but I think I should go for the proven C+.

I have asked him about uncemented conserve+ and he confirm that he made some implementations but without proven superiority vs cemented.

uncemented ... without proven superiority vs cemented.

Any superiority cannot be proven for many years. So long as he does not think it any worse, it can be only the same or better.

Do you know any more information about the DynoMom?

I typed it wrongly. I should have written "DynaMom". It is a device which has been developed by Dr Girard, who is a team member of Pr Migaud, both located at Lille's Hospital.
There is some information at http://www.surfacehippy.info/dynamomresurfacingdevice.php .

Hope it will help

Working out before surgery is a good idea.  I swam and rode a stationary bike as much as I could before my surgery. I am 4 weeks post op and can say it made a huge difference.

Good luck

Best of luck on your surgery!  You'll do great.  I worked out pretty hard post-op too.  Keep us updated.
