We've got the opportunity to take a 15 day cruise that would leave 4.5 weeks after my operation. It's mostly sea days, and I thought it would give me the opportunity to concentrate on recovery while relaxing. Anyone see any issues? We've seen people on cruises in wheelchairs and using walkers, so I figure a crutch or a cane won't be out of place.

If it were me, I would go for it, but then I love to gamble.

I would say "most" people tend to be feeling pretty good after that long.... this is not to say that some are not still suffering from some pain at 4.5 weeks post op.

Would you be flying to your port where you will leave?  If so how long will the flight be?  That would for sure have some affect on my decision.

Everyone recovers differently, but I am at 4.5 wks right now and if I had the chance for a cruise I would think I would do it.  Feel overall pretty good, but just take your ice bags - you'll still want to ice.  Good opportunity to walk a lot and be active yet still take time to rest and nap.  Probably the only time I'd do a cruise as I can't sit still very long until I had this surgery..... Definitely go for it!  By 4.5 weeks I was well enough to cruise......only I had to go back to work!!  :)

At 4.5 weeks you should be fine.  You'll want to do some walking around the deck and hopefully the ship will have a gym so you can continue your PT out on the water.

Enjoy!

I started feeling good at 4weeks. I think the cruise would assist in recovery. Get a PT plan in place and have fun.

No way I would do the cruise.  I wouldn't risk it.  I'll sacrifice and step in for you.   ;D

Just kidding.  If it is a big boat and in relatively calm seas I can't imagine any problems.  I rode a train at four weeks and took my crutches for stability.

I would say go for it, enjoy, and post pictures.

Done deal. We can drive 2.5 hours to the port, and I figure on hitting the gym and walking periodically throughout the day.

i asked my wife if i could go, she said yes. have fun!

Dan - you got me on that one.  You were the only pansy to say you wouldn't do it.  But for could reason, so you could go.

I'd go.  I give my left__ to go and I'm not talking about my left hip.

S1254 - in all seriousness, I think the cruise would be prefect timing in the recovery period.  One of the nice things you might find is that when you stop at ports and you want to do a big hike to see something, you could tell yourself, you're in recovery and just sit on the fantail with a tall brewski watching the day go by.  Sounds pretty good to me.
