When did your second hip start hurting?

Hi Bilats,

I'm 6 weeks post op from a left hip resurfacing and the operated hip is doing fine. In the last week my "good" hip has started to hurt, to the point that it's much more painful when I'm walking than the one that I had resurfaced. Over the years I've had problems with the good hip and in fact Dr. Gross said he thought he saw a torn labrum on the side we were not operating on when he looked at the original films. I'm hoping that this is a short term problem caused by overuse doing the recovery period and am curious if anyone else has had a similar experience. As positive as the whole resurfacing experience has been so far I'd sure like to avoid doing the other side right away!!

Thanks,

Larry

Dr. Gross also saw problems in the X-rays of my "good" hip, and wondered if we should consider a bilateral, but since it had never caused me any pain, I opted to wait. It started causing problems somewhere between one and two years later, and at four years now, I am looking at having it resurfaced in the next year or so. From what I have read, this is a fairly common timeline.

I definitely did, but then I knew the good side was in bad shape too (just not as bad as my left, first HR), that I had already scheduled my second operation. I had no cartilage in my 'bad' side and very little on my 'good' side.

When I started PT, my HR'ed side was so much better at all the activity, I think it put a lot more pressure on the undone side that by the time I had the second done, I was thankful.

Again, though my good side was really on its last legs.

When I had the first one done the "good" side actually hurt more but had more ROM.

Well I just had my year post op and asked my doc about the pain in my right side.  I am not bone on bone, but the joint is narrowing.  I am hoping to get two more years.  FX

When I had my initial x-rays taken both hips looked bad.  In fact, two of the surgeons who looked at them told me that the right one looked worse than the left.  I had pretty bad ROM on the right side but a lot more pain on the left, so I had that one done first.

When I went for my initial consultation I told McMinn that the left was worse than the right. But ended up having my right done. He pointed out that the left still had cartiladge but was doing the brunt of the work and as a result hurt when walking more. He asked me when my right and when my left hurt and of course the left only hurt during excercise and the right hurt all the time and kept me awake. After I fractured and ended up not weight bearing on my HR side for 3 months, my left really went down hill but now I can even out the weight it  has improved. I was told originally I might get 4 years out of my left but since the extra weight bearing work that estimate has dropped. It is now at the point where I can feel discomfort all day and sometimes keeps me awake depending on activity.

Hey Jason ..I don't mean to steal this topic but your comment about your left hip sounds identical to mine.  Never had a problem with my left until the right got scoped.  While waiting for resurface on right the left fell apart due to compensation.  X-ray did not look bad according to Su and Dr Gross who is a god sent genius.  Gross sent me to Dr Stubbs hip specialist in Winston Salem.  Took very specific X-ray and looked at the MRI.  Clearly showed the bone on bone that was not seen by others.  Said could do micro fracture which may or may not work and extremely hard 6 month rehab and could be right back in the same position.  Went for bilat resurfacing and t 3 weeks can walk a mile with 2 crutches and no crutches around the house.  If it hurts that bad, I caution you on going for hip scope.  here are the ONLY three to consider Dr Stubbs, Dr Byrd, or Dr Phillipon. I would get second opinion from top hip specialist. Dr Byrd and Phillipon will do free teleconference.  Dr Stubbs will not.
Cordially,

My right side started hurting about three years before surgery.  It started with groin pain after running.  I was going around telling people ''My b@lls are killing me!''  It kept deteriating and about ten months before bilateral surgery my left side started hurting.  By the time I had surgery, both sides were killing me full time even though my exray was much worse on the right.

LOL I actually went to the Docs with what I thought was a Hernia had a Big Black Doc fondle my balls then I got refered to a Hernia Specialist who could find no hernia after more fiddling with my bits.
