When were you given the OK to run?

I'm 6 months post op and haven't done any running but would like to do a little.  I teach a kickboxing class and would love to run at the beginning of the class with everyone.  It is a very light run on mats so not much heavy pounding and it's only for 3 minutes or so.  Should I attempt this seing that it's such a short amount of time and on mats or should I simply just wait another 6 months?

Pete i would ask your doc,
i was told i could start and introduce impact at 6 months due to my bone healing faster than normal. He did say however that i should not start running just yet.

Yes, it's really up to your doctor.  He's the one who knows how you are healing.  My doctor was probably as liberal as possible with my recovery was adamant about no running for me until 6 months.

Straight running, gradually getting more intense beginning at 6 months, is what my surgeon said.  Soccer, or side-side cutting type of running, not for a year.  That's a pretty common recomendation from surgeons.  There are some that are very conservatiove and say no running til a year.

Hey Pete - originally the good doctor thought six months for running for me, but when I saw him and he had me run, he thought I should wait a few months; no contact sports until one year.

I held off on running until about 9 months, then gradually built it up. Not a runner, but I do about 15 to 20 minutes on the treadmill now, and a full 60 minutes on the soccer field.

Good to hear from you, glad to see you're back on the mats again.

Just the other day I played a bunch of Ultimate and I did a lot of side-to-side cutting.  Tiring, and my gluts hurt.  They were sore the next day, but today they feel great.  That's how pain in your arse and legs should be, not the 4 or 5 day nerve pain, tingling, numbness, throbbing ache that you get with OA.  Pretty awesome and I'm looking forward to playing soccer, soon.

I started at 4 months dabbling with a few intervals between walking...nothing serious until 6 months though.  I believe your body is the dictator to what each is capable of doing.  My belief is that it has more to do with the strength of your muscles supporting your hip capsule.  I would not be afraid to try it a little as long as your doc is good with it.  Just STOP when it does not feel RIGHT...

To be totally honest I have been doing kicking for the past few months.  I've been hitting the bag fairly hard but not at 100%.  Most days it feels awesome but others my hip gets really sore.  I'm def. feeling a lot better overall which is great and I'm just hoping to get my flexibility back to normal in the near future.

Dannywayoflife

Your a braver man than I pete. I've resigned my self to never kicking the pads or bags again but hay Shane carwin never kicks and he can fight a bit ;D

Flexibility will get there, Pete. What kicks have you been using on the bag?

Hern,

I've mostly been doing roundhouse kicks and some light spinning back kicks.  Front kicks are really difficult and I only do them at maybe 5-10% power.  I know it's prob. not the smartest thing to be doing but I just can't help it.  That being said my hip still aches often which has me a bit nervous but I will wait it out another month or so and if it doesn't improve will make an appointment with Dr. Snyder.

I'd try maybe slowing it down a bit,.or spacing out the workouts a bit. At 7 months, you should be pretty strong with the implant, but the muscles are probably just not up to it. Maybe working on pads instead of the heavy bag would do?

Either way, glad that your ROM is up to it now.

Pete if it were me I'd slow down. Opinions vary on how long before returning to impact (I'm personally in the conservative camp) but what all docs say is a very gradual return over a lengthy time is the best way. I know its hard but this is a long term investment that can give you your old life back for a long time. Wouldn't it be a shame to blow it out early just for the sake of taking it easy for a while?

Dr. Su told me I could do trail running at 4 months and distance road running at 6 months.  But I am waiting the full 6.

Of course, I am not a normal runner like you all, I also do competitive sprinting.  I do not think I will attempt that for 12 months, not because of the hip (Dr. Su says it is fine), but because of everything else, like my hamstring for example.

I think that's smart. I think that will give you the healing time to really dive into it when you decide to.

ZAP

I was told in 6 months, and 2 weeks ago during my walk I did a little pitty pat jog up a steep path.  Then the week after, near the end of my walk on the same path, I jogged up the hill and walked down 3 times....  A couple days ago, at the same hill I jogged up and walked down 5 times and the last time I didn't want to stop so I jogged home with a BIIIIIGGGG smile on my face..  It will be 4 months next Monday post op.   I'm not recommending it.  It was very small short strides..   The hill is a pavement bicycle path that use to take me about 5 - 7 seconds to sprint up hard. So its pretty long.  I find walking up hill helped tremendously for me.  Also, I walked down hill. For some reason, it feels like my hip  muscles used to go down are weaker then the ones pulling me up..  It works different muscles going down then going up.
You just have to listen to your body and be smart about it.   keep in mind I was in shape to begin with.

Good luck.
