Well I am now booked for a BHR with Mr. McMinn for February 3rd.  What I am looking for is any advice anyone can give me on how to prepare for this surgery before making the trip from Canada to UK.

Any advice would help.

Thanks,
Carolyn

Off topic, but why would you go from Canada to the UK rather than going with a US based surgeon? Is it insurance related?

Coming to the UK to see McMinn will be far cheaper than going to the US.

Work out!  Especially your upper body and core.  You will need upper body strength especially in the early days.  Do as much cardio as your hip will allow.  In short, treat this as a goal race - you want to come into the surgery in the best shape you can be - it will make your recovery go that mush faster,

On the subject of prehab I am starting to use my wobble cushion again. I'm trying to strengthen all the small stabilising muscle groups as much as possible. I'm hoping this will aide my recovery. Also loosing as much weight prior to surgery will help massively which is what I'm trying to do also.

Couple of reasons for this.

1)  I am a small female and very light.  From what I have been reading it is very important that this resurfacing is done with precision and the placement is perfect.  I figured that if anyone was going to get it right it would be Mr. McMinn.

2)  While I am a Canadian, I am also British and grew up just 45 minutes away in Gloucester.  All my family still live there so apart from having surgery I get to spent time with my family while rehabbing a bit.

Thanks for all the advise on this.  I am pretty fit but will definitely get into the gym and work on the upper body to strengthen it some more.  I do swim 3x per week for 1 1/2 hours each time.  Hopefully that will help a little.

Have to say while I desperately want this done TOMORROW I am also very nervous as I have never had anything too major in the way of surgery and totally apprehensive as to how much I will be able to do when recovered.

Carolyn just remember that you'll need a full 12 months before returning to running. You'll probably be clear to get on your road bike @6months though but Mr McMinn insists on 12 months before running.

For afterwards start looking for if you don't already know one a really decent massage therapist who can do really deep tissue massage and ART massage. This will help you massively. Also buy a wobble cushion to help re build your stabilising muscles. Oh and buy a decent walking stick. I have one of those trekking poles which is telescopic and worked great for me last time.

Danny:

Thanks for the advice.  I was kind of hoping to race Worlds in October but may have to put that on hold.  Do you think 10 months will suffice?  I do have an amazing Physio, Massage Therapist  and an ART guy.  Hopefully they will all be in my corner after February.  I already have a wobble board and should probably start using it now as well.

Sounds like you have this down pat so it's great to hear how to rehab from a pro.  Thanks.

The length of time for returning to impact sports is a contentious one. Some surgeons say 6 months as the bone is about 90% healed then but Mr McMinn insists on 12 months as that's how long it takes the bone to fully heal.

Many people have come back earlier than that and some have paid with early revisions. Personally I would take Mr McMinns advice and wait the 12 months. Actually that's what I did and will
Do again next year for round 2.

Just to back up what Danny's saying.

There are different approaches, but it's usually best to follow your surgeon's advice since they also know any individual circumstances, so can lengthen or accelerate the time to return to full activity based on that.

Just checking if TheRunner is still checking the site. Want to follow up with her experience with Dr. Mcminn.
