Hi guys,

Firstly what an excellent site plenty of info!! I had my right BHR on the 24/12/15 and was put on 6 weeks partial weight bearing. Full weight bearing was commenced approximately 3 weeks ago. After about a week I began getting quite bad groin pain and outer thigh pain on walking so went to see my surgeon. He did an X-ray and has diagnosed a possible femoral neck stress fracture (wasn't the most obvious on xray even with his great amount of HR experience)! He has therefore put me back to the crutches for 4 weeks. I was wondering if anybody has had or has heard of a case where someone has suffered a similar fate? Also what was the resultant action by their surgeon and what happened with recovering from it? Did you have any other restrictions during this period? I am grateful for all your help guys!!

I didn't have a fracture (thankfully) so I can't help you directly. Did you get a DEXA scan for bone density before the surgery? Mine was marginally low (and extremely unexpected as an active 34yo male) and my surgeon put me on Fosamax for 6 months to minimize the risk of fractures. With that protocol he's had none.

Sorry for your news. There is a story on this site of a guy who suffered a femoral neck fracture, stayed off his leg, and the hip healed. I hope he chimes in.

High not been on here for ages. I am the idiot who overdid it and managed crush fracture my femoral head under the implant. I had the choice of total hip or try mend myself. Went for the latter. I had to go full non weight bearing for 3 months then slowly each month increase the amount of weight bearing. After six months I was using one crutch then none. 4 years on and I am fine just damaged leg is 1cm shorter. Good luck.

Yikes Jason, that sounds terrible, but I'm very glad to hear that it worked out OK! Do you have long-term restrictions on impact or other activity?

Emeson, I hope you're doing OK and I'm wishing you the best. What you're going through sounds like a nightmare, but perhaps Jason's story is cause for hope? It sounds like he did a lot more damage but successfully healed (although I don't envy that extended no weight bearing at all).

thanks for all the replies guys really appreciated :)!!

that sounds rough Jason but it sounds like you came out on top! really glad for you. my injury fingers crossed isn't so bad so I hope to make a full recovery then God willing! Thanks for the input mate! I hope it is all up for both of us from here on.

And thanks JD for your kind words. I am well just a bit down that things were going well and have now taken a few steps back but what can you do. I've had a tough year with all this stemming from a skiing accident last year so it's been a while since I've been out of action. this makes me crave normality even more!! Fingers crossed all stays well now and this fracture heals. Thanks again guys!!

My only restriction is don't tell Mr McMinn what I get up to. It feels pretty good to me but what I will say is do as you are told whilst healing. I mucked mine up in the first place by doing too much too soon. But I healed by doing as I was told. (Mostly)
I am still a volunteer lifeboat man and work long shifts on my feet working in the Hotel industry.

Can anyone, perhaps Jason, explain a bit further what sort of "overdoing" can result in a stress fracture? At what point during the recovery process? I'm 2 weeks out of a BHR and trying to figure out how much activity is helpful, e.g., walking around the block with crutches, and what sort of activity is clearly "overdoing it". Obviously, going running within the the first few months is a bad idea, but how much walking is OK?
