Hi all, just reporting at 18 months post-op that all is going really well and that my metal hip is probably the best bit of me!

Running is getting better all the time, still not doing major mileages in training because my natural hip can get 'limpy' but speed is improving with intervals and treadmill work, current PBs are 23:07 for 5k and 48:11 for 10k (last Sunday) and these equate to a Master's percentage of 72.5 (my best ever was around 74% so I am not complaining). I can run for a couple of hours/13 miles but when I did it ruined the speed I had managed to build up last fall - but I might risk a half-marathon race before the end of the year.

Biking is no problem, no long rides yet this year but managed a PB around my local speed-test circuit last week (by a few seconds) and in the same week had a beautiful afternoon on Stanage Edge (a gritstone crag) and managed to climb a couple of routes (Goliath's Groove and Left Unconquerable) I last did about 40 years ago!

In the last few weeks there have been minor aches and pains from various muscles and joints but these have all cleared up quickly, and my BHR has been totally indifferent to all the increased activity over the last six months...

Big thanks to Mr McMinn for the invention and Chris Kershaw for the fitting - I think the natural hip probably has another year in it but I shall have no hesitation about getting another BHR when the time is right!

Hi mate,
That's terrific news on your 18 month progress, and on the range of mobility and speed also. I have followed your progress, as we are of the same virtual age and do same type of sports etc. No doubt you are very goal driven as well !!.
Keep up the good work , and trust that as your summer and race season is fast approaching, everything fits into place, so to speak.
Its our winter approaching now ,  :( so are still sort of "parked up" . No need to slog it out in the wind, cold and rain- will leave that to the "youngsters".
Top Regards,
Cheers,
Kiwi Boy. ;)

Reading the miles you guys are putting on your resurfaced hips got me out running yesterday.  I'm 13 months post hip resurfacing on my left hip.  I never went back to running after having the right hip resurfaced in 2011 because I was trying to make the left hip last.  Instead I walked a lot and did the elliptical at the gym.  But I ran a slow 3 miles yesterday, and it felt good.  I missed running a lot.  Thanks for sharing your stories and your example.

Hi To All Good Mates and Friends,

Recently I had my 2 YEAR POST OP. check-up with my Surgeon, Dr. Hugh Blackley, Auckland, New Zealand. Although 3 weeks ahead of the actual "Anniversary date" [ Op was 7/7/14] it was practical to do it then due to family and travel arrangements.
I was very confident of getting the big tick of approval, as I had a slow, steady re-hab,+ took 1 year off from my Triathlon racing. [2014/2015 season]. This proved PERFECT, and upon reviewing these 2 years Post-Op. X Rays and Cobalt, Chromium levels , Dr Blackley was very pleased with the results.  ;)
My range of motion is excellent  on the LHBR leg, so after   discussing everything with Dr Blackley and talking in general about competing back at top level, he was more than happy to see me returning to top level competition. Naturally nothing is 100% guaranteed , but I have a number of years left in me, so long as one races wisely and trains accordingly.
The morale of the story is basic, if it hurts  :'(  BACK OFF, REST AND RECOVER, and then start up again. Dr Blackley made this point very clear indeed. As it is winter "down under", I will enjoy a few more weeks of easy as training, before getting down to the serious side of the real stuff.
The 2015/2016 NZ Triathlon season turned out to be a satisfying and rewarding accomplishment, so I look forward to cranking it along, come 2016/2017 season. I have been lucky enough to have a fantastic wife behind me in my quest to race at top level, along with a dedicated Soft Tissue Therapist, Roger Gooch, who spent many a session "panel-beating" [LOL] my hip so as to address the scar tissue concerns. A number of "hippies" neglect this work and costs, but I'm positive that in missing it, it is well to the detriment of a strong and successful recovery.
To all fellow "hippies" out there, THANKS for the support, news and encouragements- they sure make a BIG Difference.
Top Regards,
Cheers  :D   ;D   :)
