Hi All,
I am 10 days post op with my second hip resurfacing procedure done by Dr. Gross. My first procedure (right hip) was in 2016.

So far, recovery has been fairly good. I'm moving to one crutch today and feel pretty confident with that. I have minor sensitivity at the incision but otherwise no more hip/groin/knee pain. My procedure was done outpatient and I was a bit apprehensive about that since the last one in 2016 was inpatient and I was 6 years younger.  I worked to strengthen my upper body prior to surgery since I knew early recovery would be tricky.

In terms of my post op pain...I must have a high pain threshold as I never took any narcotic pain meds after surgery; just Tylenol and Mobic - which I'm still taking.

Lots of leg, ankle, foot swelling but controlling it with compression stockings which I highly recommend for others.

Feel free to send questions. I have high confidence in Dr. Thomas Gross and his team. Can't speak highly enough about the entire team, their protocol and follow-up. Thank you Dr.Gross, Lee Webb and team!

Tomorrow is two weeks post op and I still have considerable swelling in my lower calf, ankle and foot.  On one crutch but I wonder about the swelling. Used the ice machine for 10 days several times a day, and compression stocking.  Any suggestions?

Congrats! I had a resurfacing (1) 12 years ago. it was a BHR MOM and now I'm having slightly elevated metal ion counts.. Not too bad but researching will tell me more. Is yours plastic? Any feelings about composition of prosthesis? I was kinda under the opinion that they were phasing out resurfacing but apparently not(?). Thanks and keep it up!!
By the way, I'm 74 and used to run regularly. Still walk 3-8 miles 4x a week, run a little,  as well as biking and swimming, etc. and it has held up v well!

After my right hip resurfacing in 2016 I had a lot of upper/lower leg/ankle/foot swelling on my operative side. If I recall correctly it took a few days before it really swelled up. Nobody seemed to think it was all that unusual when I went in for my follow up at ten days. I can't remember if it was even a topic of discussion. Over time, it dissipated. When it started to deflate let's just say I needed to be near a toilet, as it was just excess fluid that had to go somewhere. When I had my left hip resurfaced last year I fully expected it to swell up after surgery, but it didn't. I doubt it's anything to worry about, but you could always check with your surgeon's office to be sure.

I am 4 weeks post op and yes had significant swelling in my operative leg as well as some in the other. I had forgotten about the swelling since my first procedure in 2016. Over the 4-week period the swelling went from my upper thigh down to my calf and stayed in my ankle, foot area for 4 weeks. The worst was at the end of the day.  I did check in with Dr. Gross' office about the swelling and yes, it is normal although I think some have more swelling than others. I woke up yesterday and the swelling is gone. It makes a significant difference in any limping.

My recovery with this procedure as with the other (2016) was very consistent with what I was told and I'm very appreciative of Dr. Gross and his team.  I went from two crutches first two weeks, to one crutch week 3, to no crutches week 4.

My implant is the Biomet Magnum (Metal).
