Gout

My husband  (53) has gout, which is under control.   He has recently been
diagnosed with arthritis of the hip, and is suffering pain, discomfort and mobility has been
cut dramatically.   He is too young for the hip replacement, however, I'm excited to hear
about this procedure.  I also have read that people who's kidneys do not eliminate the materials
that come from this procedure are not good candidates.   If his kidney's do not
eliminate purines well, does that mean that his kidneys would not function properly with the
hip resurfacing, and that this form of help is not in his best interest?

You are right that your husband should consider a hip resurfacing.  The one thing that you might not be clear on is that the hip resurfacing BHR or other device and any of the THR large ball devices called MOM (metal on metal) are all the same metal.  I think you are refering to the Metal Ion Issue or Non issue as many doctors think.  You can read more about it here  http://www.surfacehippy.info/metalioninformation.php

I don't think anyone on this board could give you a good answer on how safe it would be for your husband to have a hip resurfacing.  I am willing to bet - it is probably ok.  But you need to ask the doctors that question.  You need medical answers so you have reliable information.

You can get free email consultations with several of the best hip resurfacing surgeons in the world if you write to Dr. Bose of India and Dr. De Smet of Belgium.  They both do free consultations if you send them your husbands x-rays as a digital attachement in  .jpg form.  They are quick to answer and will explain any problems you ask about.

Thank you so much for your swift reply!!   
We live in Southern California, and only one Dr. that I have seen does this procedure from
the West Lake area, about an hour away.   I thought to call him for a consultation.
Our current doctor put him into therapy and he goes about once a week for treatment.
He brushed the idea that my husband would be looking a the THR in a few years...but never mentioned
about the hip resurfacing.    I just found it while searching the internet.
I'm very excited about this concept, and will continue my research and keep you posted.

Hi 

You have quite a few good hip resurfacing surgeons in CA.I will list them at the end of this email.  Most regular orthopedics don't even know about the current modern version of hip resurfacing and many don't want to take the technical training to learn.

Don't worry about a little travel, it is worth the trip to use a good experienced surgeon.  I traveled 6 hours to DC by car and then 8 1/2 hours to Belgium.  Many others have travel to Dr. Bose in India.  Some did not have health insurance and others just wanted to use the really experienced doctors.  At least you can get some free consultations via email to get you started.
