Opposite leg effects

I just had my right hip resurfaced on October 1 and am feeling great to have the pain of OA gone.  I am doing outpatient PT 3x/week and aqua therapy on the off days.   I regaining strength and functionality of the operative leg and I am walking with a cane for up to 1/2 mile.

One issue I have is a mildly painful tingling/burning sensation in the outer abductor muscle of my left leg, particularly after I have been laying on my back asleep.  Feeling is simlar to when your leg "falls asleep".  This sensation developed approx 10 days after surgery and is sporadic but somewhat annoying phenomena.  Does not impact my capabilities but a curious phenomena.

I would be curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Welcome to Hip Talk.

I had my hip resurfaced 1 1/2 years ago.  I had many strange things happening in my body.  My opposite leg hurt and I had bursitus in it. 

Your whole body is learning to become balanced again.  Most people with bad hips walk bent over and in unusual ways to compensate for the pain and stiffness.  It takes a long time for the body to get back to normal.  Many strange aches, pains, etc happen along the way.

I think you are very early in your recovery and your other leg is still doing a lot of extra work for the operated leg.

Did you ask your doctor or PT about the "falling asleep leg"?  It might be good to get input from the professionals.  I have my arms to that.

Where do you live and who did your resurfacing?  Sounds like you are having a good and quick recovery. 

Stay in touch think about writing a little story about your hip resurfacing if you have time.

Thanks for the reply. 

Have not talked to the Doc about this, the PT specialists have stated similar responses but some have stated it may be related to the local damage to the sciatic nerve which runs in the vincinity of the hip resurfacing operation.  I have my four week follow up with the Doc tommorrow morning and will certainly inquire.

I live in Jupiter Florida and had my resurfacing done by Vince Fowble, who I found on thanks to your web page.  I have also had discussions with Paul who posts occasionally onto this site who also had resurfacing done by Fowble.

I had my surgery the day after yours but can't say I have had the same issue.  I am jealous that you get to go in the water, I still have a few more days until the scar is totally healed.  I did ride a stationary bike for the first time today for about 10 minutes and then my usual walks of about 2-2 1/2 miles total for a day.  I keep my knees slightly bent when I sleep and I also like to flip over onto my stomach for an hour or so each day.  I just have 10 exercises I do 2x each day.  Hope all continues to go well.
