Hi everyone,

I'm having my left hip resurfaced with Dr. Gross next month. First surgery ever.

This is my first post, though I have been reading here for years as part of my unremitting research and self-education. So first of all, thank you Pat for this wonderful site and thank you to everybody that have posted here. Reading your stories and thoughts have been so helpful I can't even express. Special thanks to the people checking in and reporting their results years after; it's really good to see how people fare over time.

I just turned 51 and I've been dealing with OA for probably 7 years or so. For most of it the biggest issue I had was not so much the pain but rather limited range of motion. And a limp. I was really trying to avoid surgery any way I could. But it's gotten much worse, especially in the last 6-9 months. Now I can see that it won't be long before I'm basically disabled. As it is now I'm thinking twice about doing stuff. Forget sports or real exercise, that's been gone for quite a while.

My diagnosis is osteoarthritis. According to Dr. Gross I have cam impingement and that's the likely cause (other doctors have said dysplasia but he disagrees). He says I'm in the best outcome group (thankfully!). I am carrying a lot of extra weight though; was at about 36 BMI when I spoke to him a couple of months back -- I'll be a little less than that by surgery. He really encouraged me to try and lose whatever weight I could before surgery though even at a BMI of 36 he wasn't worried. It's over 40 BMI he won't do. Because of my weight it's possible that I'll be on a slower recovery, but we'll see. It's more about post surgery management as far as he's concerned.

Anyway, I can't wait. I'm so ready to get this fixed. :)

Please wish me well, and any advice/cautions are appreciated -- it's still not too late to back out ;).

Jhippy welcome. Your in good hands with Gross, and if I were you I would just heed all the advise he gives you. If he's said loose a few pounds then try and alter your diet a little. Remember good quality nutrition is also very very important post op and will help your body to recover.
