Of course the card won't give you a free pass at the airport - expect scans, the doctor tells me. Just handy to have. The card is actually more helpful in showing people what I had done to my hip. Some think resurfacing means "going in and scraping out the joint." Seriously. Somebody asked me that.

Isn't it amazing how most people have no idea what hip resurfacing is?  It is nice to have that card to show people, my Mom has one with a picture of her x-ray of her THR.  I actually made up business cards that have an x-ray of a guy that has one of each on it, where you can see one side that has a THR and the other side that has a BHR along with website addresses to this site, the yahoo surface hippy message board and my non-profit organization.  I try to tell as many people about hip resurfacing as possible.  It still amazes me how many surgeons will not even tell a patient that resurfacing even exists.  Very sad.  Thank goodness for the internet and for websites like this one.  Pat is doing a huge service to SO many people with all the hard work she puts into this.

I was surprised to find out I did not set off the metal detectors when I flew this past weekend.  My stepmom said she always sets off the detectors with her THR, but my BIL has several metal plates in his leg and he does not set off alarms.  Your mileage may vary??
