Spencer,

I guess I've been out of the loop since I didn't see your update post on the 19th till just now. Glad to here things are going well. I bet your glad to have that picc line out. It's a wonderful way to give daily meds but a pain in the butt to have it. My son had one in the back of his head when he was born for several weeks due to him being 4  months premature and needing numerous meds daily.
Good Luck on your road to recovery and raising money with your Jog-A-Thon.

Enjoy training your cross country team.( I ran track for 12 yrs but hated cross country)

Spencer,

Great to see you are progressing and recovering well. I admire your comittment to the kids, coaching 5 days a week,
Well done.
I would like to send your team a small donation for the jog-a thon . I know how important it is to stay involved and give back what you can from your experiences in sport to kids.

Can you let me know the best address to send the donation to or you can mail me directly.

Keep up the good work.

John P

Good to hear Spencer. Bet you wish you could be out there running too. Won't be long now, man.
All the best - Tom

Hey Spencer - How was your visit to the ID doc? Everything progressing well, we hope.

sroberts

Hey Tom,

Yes the visit with the ID doc went very well. (As a side note he is an avid rock climber and climbs with a friend of mine who also had RBHR with Dr Su last April) Her is a comparison of my bloodwork:
8/27                         9/2
crp        1.6               1.0
sed rate 10                 6
Hgb       13.4              14.0
Hct        38.0              40.3

Everything looks good so far. I'm riding the trainer 30-55 min easy. Hope to get my picc line out 9/23. Next blood test is tomorrow. I've lost 9 lbs since I haven't been able to be very active. Hope to gain that back soon. I haven't been at 174lbs since 10th grade.

take care,

spencer

TomBuell

Not sure what the numbers all mean, but good to hear they're improving.
Had to chuckle - Usually when I'm inactive, I gain weight (like that past two years). I'm ramping up the exercise, including longer stints on the rowing machine, in hopes of starting to shed the 30+ pounds I picked up hobbling around on the old hip. Feeling better every day.
Hang in there - Tom

sroberts

Hey Tom,

Glad to hear you are doing well. The first two numbers are indicators for infection and the last two numbers are hemoglobin and hematocrit--essential for endurance. All the numbers are in the normal range which means the infection is gone. The key will be the first two-six weeks after the antibiotics are finished. The ID doc said he was sure it was a superficial infection that had not penetrated to the hip. All good news!

Hey everybody,
I saw the surgeon today. Bloodwork is normal. No more restricitons. I'm cleared to ride on the road again. I see the ID doc on Tuesday and should get the picc line out. I plan to start teaching spinning again beginning the first week of October. Also planning on returning to personal training at that time as well. I am grateful for all those who have supported me for the past 6 weeks. Have a great weekend and I'll give another update Tuesday.

Spencer ... Great news  man !!! I kept you in my prayers . Lots to be said about knee mail ! I am ahead of schedule on my rehab...but Hurricane Ike is kinda setting us back a bit here in Houston. We had home and property damage but are very grateful... others lost alot ,alot lost everything . Released to go back to work on 10/1 and will continue to do work with the Cormet 24 month study group.   A heartfelt "Congrats" on your "all clear" status. Way to go bro'  ;)

Pat, Bill, and Sherry,

I really appreciate your support. Thanks for your kind words. I went out for my first outdoor bike ride today- 1 hr. It felt good. Being a cyclist and a triathlete i haven't had hair on my legs since 1988. It was weird feeling the wind blowing through the hair on my legs today--ha.

Bill,
I was thinking of you during Ike. We were watching the coverage on satellite TV. Did you lose power. I have a client in Brownsville who's breathing a sigh of relief. Take care.

Hey Spencer - Glad to hear things are going well. Funny about the wind in your (leg) hair. I used to row with a guy who shaved his legs for adventure races, and we teased him about it. He considered it a badge of honor.
And Big Bill CASH - glad you escaped the worse of Ike. The last remnants of it even reached up here to Pittsburgh, and several trees were blown down and a neighbor's garage was crushed. Nothing like you had down there, I'm sure.

Hi all,

This morning the ID Dr removed my picc line and I am now off of antibiotics. For the past 3 days I've been riding my bike on the road. It's been a rollercoaster but the hip feels great. I go back to teaching spinning and training folks on Monday. Thanks for all your thoughts, prayers and support. Time to get busy again.

Spencer,

Thanks again for sharing all that with us.... you have probably helped more people that you'll ever know.

Enjoy that new hip now and may you put thousands of miles on that metal.

Lisa,

It was great getting that picc line out. It was over 12 inches long and felt very weird when the dr pulled it out....no pain though.

Chuck,

Thanks and same goes for you.
