One year out

Left hip resurface in NY in October 2022. Prior to surgery I was racing Duathlons and running up to half marathons. After surgery I used Chiropractor and physical therapy for recovery. I waited until 6 months before jogging. About 1/4 mile in my hip fatigued which caused me to stop running and limp while walking until I felt I could run again. This was over and over and has not improved at all. I also have a sharp pain in the front of the groin when I try to walk with a normal stride. I brought these issues to the attention of the surgeon and the PA responded in an email that I could do any activity with no restrictions without worrying about hurting the hip. I continued and eventually did a short duathlon two weeks shy of being a year out of surgery. I was in so much pain after that I contemplated going to the ER. The pain finally subsided after taking meds. A month later I had my one year follow up with the surgeon and they found I had a stress fracture along the implant stem on the femur. They had me go non-weight bearing on crutches and followed Dr orders and beyond. I have again tried running and have the same exact pain and fatigue in the hip. The surgeon/PA tell me the next step in THR with absolutely no reasoning as to why I am having issues. Prior to surgery I had a video visit which concluded in getting the hip resurface. I have had so much pain and discomfort since surgery that I made a physical visit for the one year follow up and they are offering no additional help. I did researchi to find the top surgeon for hip resurface surgery so that if there were any issues they would try to figure it out but I am getting no where and completely frustrated and in pain/fatigue. I also noted to the surgeon that it felt that at the end of each step when I try to take a normal step the hip feels like there is a lever type of feel that makes me limp and feels like the hip is not right. I am looking for anyone else that has had this pain and fatigue in their hip that can offer advice or what their solution was. I really want to get back to being active.

Hi Scott, I'm sorry you are dealing with this, I understand the frustration.

Is the surgeon that did your surgery initially the same as the top surgeon you're trying to contact? If not, I'd try a couple of surgeons to see what their perspective is.

If a THR has been mentioned by your original surgeon, I'd make an appointment to find out why that is. You need to have that information, no matter what path you choose.

I haven't had these issues, but can empathize.

Thanks for the feedback. I am reaching out to a different surgeon for a second opinion. Yes, just recommending a THR because I am having the issues with the resurface does not make sense not knowing what is causing the issues. They could do the THR and I could be in the same situation if not worse. The initial surgeon says the new x-rays and MRI show the installed parts look textbook other than the stress fracture which should be healed by now.

Doing the THR may be the solution, but you are your best advocate and they work for you. You need the best information to make a good decision. If they can't find a solution, you would benefit from someone else who can.

Hey Scott I was wondering if we both might have had the same surgeon. I had a lot of the same issues you mentioned and finally after 8 years post op I finally have what seem to be solutions, I have a very long story but if you want to send me a message we could discuss further. I've been working on getting my story together to post on here to help others , im just having a hard time getting it all the make sense and be concise as there were many different levels of issues that I experienced that I feel like a lot of doctors don't know about.

Well, the 'hip is out of the socket' :) as to the surgeon who did your procedure. In any event I am surprised at the ambiguity here: my understanding is that if there is a neck fracture post resurface the 'revision' will have to be a THR. At least one surgeon told me that point blank: fracture after resurface (which happens in something like 1-3% of resurfacings, depending on who is talking about whose 'data') = proceed to THR. Presumably / hopefully, that would resolve the issue because the neck / head (with the point of fracture) would be removed as this would be a 'standard' THR, and then voila you should be no better / worse off than any other post THR patient.
