1 year anniversary with Dr. Gross

Hi All,
Greetings from NH. I am at my 1 year anniversary with Bilateral procedure with Dr. Gross.  It's hard to believe how fast a year went by.  I am back to all pre-surgery activities (Hockey, Skiing, Whitewater kayaking, hiking, walking, biking, gym every day, etc).   I have not done much running but I don't really miss it much.  Swimming has been great and I picked that up during the recovery process.   I feel I am still improving in both strength and flexibility.  There is still some discomfort in the hip flexor area with aggressive knee-hugs and crossing legs.  Seem to be gradually improving.  More of discomfort that pain.  I am very happy with the progress and thankful for the expertise of Dr. Gross and the team.  Next week I'm heading off to Revelstoke, Red MT, and Cat Skiing.   I would have never been able to do that a year ago.  Thanks to many on this site for encouragement and input.  It was instrumental in my decision to go this path and also very helpful with recovery and rehab.

Great news Philbrd. Yet another fellow bilateral patient of Dr. Gross with a great outcome. As you have noted, it is likely you will still see improvements even after a year. It's been three years after my surgeries, but if I recall correctly, I was making some additional progress after the first anniversary through to the second. I also share your feelings with respect to how helpful and influential this website was to me. I'm so glad I found it.

I just had hip #2 done Yesterday so I’m now on the other side of this. It’s very encouraging for me to see how well you have progressed with your HR.  I just read about Revelstok, you are going to have a blast!

Hi Dan (Philbrd) - I just joined this forum to see if I could connect with other whitewater kayakers and/or rafters. I found your post from 2020. How long did you wait before getting back into a whitewater kayak? I'm 9 weeks post-op for my left hip resurfacing and had been thinking of rafting or taking an inflatable kayak this Summer, but am now wondering if I should wait a whole year to be safe. I would appreciate learning your process and timing and fingers crossed you are still active on this forum.

Also, how are you doing now?

Every doctor seems to have a different suggestion on when to get back to things, so at the end of the day follow what your doctor suggests  Just for a data point, my doctor says after 1 year back to everything you like (motocross for me), but nothing high impact for the first year.  The risk is the neck of the femur breaking.  It's weakened by shaving some of the bone off to fit the ball, but it regains bone density and strength over time, and by 1 year it should be good and strong.
