58 years old at surgery, right hip, Stryker Cormet.  Jan 2009, Dr. Snyder.

It's taken over 2 years for my legs to both feel the same length.
The hip is quite good, and flexibility is still improving.

I had my right hip resurfaced on Aug. 30, 2011 at age 59. I'm three weeks into it and doing ok. Dr. Pritchett used a hybrid mix of a Stryker X3 acetabular component with a BHR femoral component.

Luanna, you got a resurfacing with two components from different manufacturers and using different materials! Can you tell us more information about what you got and why your surgeon chose this mix?

Thank you.

D.

Hi lopsided,
Sure. Dr. Pritchett uses metal on metal for males and larger females and for small females he uses a polyethelene acetabular component and a metal femoral component. He also mentioned that he will be conducting a study on this combination and publishing results in the future. Mr. McMinn has installed (not sure if that is correct word) 20 of these to date and I believe they will be sharing data on results.

In his own words from one of his studies: "Polyethylene should be reconsidered for resurfacing because of the superior wear characteristics of
cross-linked polyethylene. Also, newer cobaltchromium prostheses have reduced roughness. It will take many years to confirm the wisdom of this
approach. When polyethylene wear occurs, it is anticipated that revision to another polyethylene bearing without disturbing the well-fixed metal
shell will be possible. Women need not be denied hip resurfacing surgery."

Excellent information Luanna.  Thanks for sharing.

I love how these top surgeons continue to search for better ways to do it.  And to be able to offer hip resurfacing to a wider population of patients.

LBHR and RBHR at 42, separated by about 6 months.

BTW - Pritchett mentioned a study he's working on with polyurethane on ceramic (in the lab).  Not sure if and when he'll have any results from that, but he thought those two materials were promising.
LBHR 2/22/11, RBHR 8/23/11 - Pritchett.

Greetings!

Had recently completed my 55th revolution around the Sun when I had a BHR installed on my right side in San Francisco about two weeks ago!
