Got the ok today to have hip resurfacing - yippee!!!
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:49:14 AM »
Hi............I'm so happy :) This morning I saw Mr Khasif who has agreed to perform a hip resurfacing operation.  He really went through the cons in depth but I stood my ground - and was totally respectful - and he agreed to do it.  I'm so relieved.  I thought that at nearly 60 I might be considered too old.  Also as I'm having the operation on the NHS I did wonder whether the financing of the operation might be an issue.  I will be going to a specialist unit in Epsom which has a superb reputation.  I will keep you posted when I know the date of my op.  Thank's to everyone for their advice.  This website has been invaluable to me - I can't tell you how grateful I am.  Jan49

Jan,

How could anyone not be happy to see another person happy about such a decision.  But if I could play the devils advocate for a moment, wiht no intention of changing your mind...

Before I decided to have my hip fixed, and which procedure to use, I saw three seperate doctors and solicited their unbridaled opinions.  Two of the three do both BHR and THR.  It wsa only after I heard from all three that i would be a good candidate for a resurfacing (even from the one who didn't do them) that I felt comfortable with the choice.  I'm all for patient advocacy and all, but maybe you should think about getting a second opinion if you had to "convince" your doctor to give you a resurfacing procedure.  It couldn't hurt.

Glad to hear that you're a good candidate for an HR.

One thing you might want to check the surgeons past history.

How many HR's has he done?  Infection rates at the hospital?  How many complications has that doctor had.

Since you live accross the pond you are lucky enough to have some of the best HR surgeons in the world like McMinn and Treacy.

Ask lot's of questions before you step all the way into the water.  Too many patients have come back and said they wished they had listened and found a surgeon who had more surgeries under their belt.

Hi.............things are moving quite quickly for me now!  I have my pre-assessment on the 16 March and the HR operation on 2 April!  Mr Kashif has told me that whilst I'm under anaesthetic if the HR does not like promising he will perform a THR.  I currently weigh ta about 10st 6lbs (5'2" tall) and want to get down to 9st 7lbs before the op if I can.  The only problem I have with losing weight at the moment is my very reduced level of exercise.  I do try to walk for at least a mile a day but it's not so easy sometimes.  If anyone has any pre-op advice I really would welcome it.  Many thanks Jan49  ;D

Hi Jan,

I really would'nt worry about your weight, you are well within healthy guidlines.

I have been really fit all my life, but as you correctly say it is difficult to do some activities as the effects of a difunct hip take hold.

Try not to worry to much about cv work, if you can walk thats good...what you will find really beneficial is to try and organise a weights programe, it only has to be light but all over muscle mass is really beneficial pre-op and you will reap the rewards post-op. With your timescale for you operation you have more than enough time.

If you would like any help I would be glad to help.

Regards

MASAI BAREFOOT TECHNOLOGY?
« Reply #5 on: February 15, 2009, 11:35:34 AM »
Hi............do any of you know much about MBT (Masai Barefoot Technology) shoes?  I bought a pair (£150) last November when my two year old pain was diagnosed as osteoarthritis.  They take a little while to get used to as you need to centre yourself and then roll foot forward - when I first got them I was a bit like tigger which was great but totally exhausting on your calf muscles.  The idea of them is to reduce pressure on hips, knees etc.  I do only wear them for a short while now (as the leg muscles really pump up) but I was wondering whether they will be good for me post-op or should I use them with caution? Any advice would be appreciated...........thanks Jan49
