any Pre-surgery prep for BHR?
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:32:33 PM »
I am scheduled foir BHR on right hip in mid-October. I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in late 2006. Cortisone worked ok for first few treatments but, I can no longer run (I was a distance runner for 15 years) and volleyball is difficult. I am 50 & male - Doc says I am ideal candidate.

My question -- I work out in a local gym (stationary bike & core strengthening) and ride about 80 miles/week on a bike. What training and/or strengthening can I work on to best prepare me for surgery and assist in a fast recovery?

I run up to surgery but I read older post by spencer and the recovery workout he did and I did it pre op as much as I could. Hips/glutes/hamstring workouts, spin classes and core strengthing. Check out the "Crossfit" workouts they work real good for me.  Btw do you any marathons planned for the future.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I am on the right track.  I ran marathons for 8 years, but after my last, my hip was sore for two days (I soon discovered I had OA).  My doc says I could do it again, but after years of 30-40 miles per week, I am retired. But 15K are possible.
I am also concerned with BHR longevity. I am told 20 years -- I prefer not to push it so another reason to not run marathons.
