Dr. Reis Information
« on: November 12, 2007, 01:46:47 AM »
Hello,

I have been in to see Dr. Michael Ries (or is it Reis?) at UCSF Arthritis Center.  He says he uses the BHR and has trained in the UK.  I don't find him on any resurfacing surgeon list.  Is anyone out there a patient of his?  If so, what is your experience with this surgeon?  Anyone heard of this surgeon?  I'm wondering how much experience he has with hip resurfacing.

I'm considering going to see Dr. Amstutz because of the large number of resurfacing surgeries he has performed.  I've learned that he prefers his own design, the Conserve Plus.  Any thoughts on Dr. Amsutz?  Any thoughts on BHR vs. Conserve?

Thanks,
Chief

Hi
I think I might have heard of someone using him on the Yahoo Group. But my memory is not always the best.

The best way to find out about your doctor is - ask him.  How many hip resurfacings have you done to date.  How many revisions of them to date? How many slipped acetabular cups to date? How many femur neck fractures to date?  If he won't give you an answer  - find another doctor.  All the good experienced doctors will share information with you.  Take my list of questions and ask them - if he won't take time with you - you don't need him slicing and dicing you.  Print this out and take it with you

I don't have every hip resurfacing doc on my list.  I don't have any way of knowing about them unless they write to me or their patients do.  I also have decided to only list doctors that have done at least 100 hip resurfacings now.  That was my guide, then I had people wanting their doctors listed that were less experienced.  Now with all the slipped cups and problems with the newer doctors, I am once again going back to my guidline of 100 resurfs.

Many doctors us the Wright C+ when the BHR doesn't have the right size for your hip.  It isn't the hip device that is important - it is the surgeon doing the hip resurfacing that is important.

There are getting to be quite a few experienced docs in CA.  Check out my list  http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php

Good luck and keep in touch.

Chief,

I am getting MRI results today from a doctor here in SoCal, though after finding out he's only done 1 BHR, I've decided to consult with a doctor on Pat's list with more experience.  From what I've read here from Pat and others, I echo Pat's suggestion you get a surgeon with experience under his belt.  I have my consult in 15 days, unless he has a cancellation prior.  I'm also sending copies of my records to another Dr in South Carolina.  It doesn't hurt to get as many opinions as you can, in my opinion.  Unfortunately, my hips are getting worse each day, it seems.  I hope they last me until my appointment on the 27th.  Good luck on your doctor quest.

Terry

I am also in the SF Bay area.  I would recommend going to Dr. Gilbert, I believe he might be in the same group as Dr. Reis, but Dr. Gilbert has a lot more experience and I hear he is a very talented surgeon.
