Just got into a car crash...
« on: April 14, 2011, 12:15:44 PM »
I had both hips done, 7 months and 4 months ago. Today I was sitting at a traffic light, waiting for the green light, when a car came in the other direction, pulled a U turn to get in my lane, never hit the brakes and just plowed into me from behind.

It was a pretty hard impact, we pulled over into a parking lot, I stepped out of the car and walked around it, looked at the damage (rear bumper completely broken lengthwise), checked with the other driver, exchanged info, called the cops and ...  only then did I think, wait a minute.. what about my hips?

So I walked out of the car, checked for pain or soreness and realized that not only wasn't I sore anywhere on my hips, but I had a little soreness on my neck. That's about it.   I know I stomped down on the brakes to keep myself from going into the car in front, so I put a lot of stress on my 4 month old hip resurface, but no problems at all.

The only bad thing is that the driver is 87 years old and I couldn't be mad at him. Bummer.

The main thing is you, your hips and the old fella who hit you are all ok. Metal can be replaced (I mean the cars...not ya hips  ;) ;D )

Yup, it's all good  :).

The old guy thanked me for being nice to him, but I told him it happens to all of us. The hips held up well, though and that's one thing I had actually worried about when I started driving after the surgeries. Held up so well I completely forgot to worry about them.

Thanks guys!  I just thought I'd pass that along; it seems that even as early as 4 months, we can take an impact and not be in bad shape.

I think about getting slammed by someone every time I get in a car since I had my hips done. Just taking a hard shot is scary. Glad you and the other driver are O.K. Glad your hips are O.K. Did you have your seat belt on and if you did was there stress on your hips from that? I wear mine all the time and wonder if the belt will press on the pelvis if in a wreck.

Unfortunately the hips don't come with a road hazard warranty.

Always have the seat belts on, and there was no stress at all on my hips. I really stood on the brakes, so I thought that might have put some strain on me, but no problem.

No problem, Steve - I figure that one good thing I get from this is that with enough healing time, this kind of mishap is not going to damage us more than others.

I am happy you are ok.

Thanks, Chuck - didn't mean to scare anyone, but I thought it would give people some info earned at personal expense that one thing that scared me is no longer an issue (at least for full blooded rear impacts).

I felt kind of stupid about it, but I was a bit exhilerated after, once I knew everybody was ok, to see that my hips could take that kind of impact and be fine. I stretched this morning, even did the roller on my IT band and didn't feel any new post - adrenaline aches and pains, so I guess no problems.

Did the extra metal in your hips trigger the traffic lights to change unexpectedly?

Glad everyone is OK.  I am 4 weeks post op and not allowed to drive yet, thought it could be due to the Doc not wanting the opportunity to "stomp" on the brakes hard during this phase of recovery.

Again - glad you could get out and walk around.

Cheers - Phill

Thanks Phil, no unexpected changes on the lights, but maybe some magnetic pull swerved his car..  ;D

Thanks Nekko, nothing's wrong with the neck now, just a bit sore before, everything seems good. Will get in contact with the surgeon just in case to see what he says, but I just went through a tough workout with a trainer and no impact in the hips or the neck.
