odd noise and and grating in right hip
« on: April 27, 2011, 01:10:51 PM »
Hi - I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to me.

I have had two hip resurfaces. Left Feb 09 and Right June 09. Both are ok
fundamentally but the right took much longer to settle down.
For instance, I was riding one month after my first hip resurfacing (it was the fault of the physio who said it was the best thing I could do but on a follow up visit to my consultant he was horrified and said three months at least until everything beds in). My point though was I was agile enough to get on and off and ride until I realised I shouldn't be on a horse.
When I had my right hip done there were
complications during surgery. Not sure what only that I was there for longer
than I should have been and lost so much blood that I was asked to take a
blood transfusion. (I refused so had to go on iron for quite a few months
and the recovery was long and slow but the hip itself seemed okish.)
I have found it difficult to bend on my haunches but think it's a matter of
compensating during the years that my hips weren't so good and no one knew
why. I think my knees lost muscle too (not sure how relevant all this is
other than my general flexibility wasn't marvellous). However, I do walk a
lot and general housework and gardening and I horse ride (fell off last year
very badly on my right hip in July time and had to see a chiropractor to put
my back right and also tore some cartilage in my left knee).
Last November I was gardening and bent to do something. Straightening up it
was as though my hip joint didn't move fast enough and then suddenly clunked
fiercely and grated which although wasn't painful it sent a fearful shudder
through me.  Strangely after than I found a more relaxed movement in my
lower back and I was able to stride out better. Last week (gardening again)
the same thing happened and this time it was a louder, clunkier and awful
grating sound. It appears to happen when I do a particular movement and
always as I've straightening up again.
Went to my doctor this morning and she has referred me to physio in the hope
that it may sort it out before doing xrays and others. Hope she's right that
it could be a ligament problem. However, I thought someone on your forum may
have an answer to this.
Strangely since that last episode I haven't experienced another one doing the same sort of bend and in fact, my hip feels as though it's freer and my back looser than it has been so I'm now feeling a little fraudulent!

To me, since you are the owner and operator of your body, you get to call the shots. If you feel it's important enough, pressure them for X-rays and an analysis. Not saying anything is wrong, just worth checking if you'd feel better.

Hi Annieg,

As you've probably seen my posts, I ride but do not garden. I have my right hip resurfaced, but have only experienced the "clunking" sound now and then when straightening up, not the grating and grinding.
Could we have an update? How are you feeling now? Love to know, hope you are doing well.   Luann

I would definitely have it checked out.

It almost sounds like what I was dealing with in my bad hip.  I would move certain ways and it would pop and grind a little.  I could in fact cause this to happen every time with certain movements.  Then I would experience better movement and less pain for awhile.

I have attributed this to muscles moving across uneven surfaces and finding a new spot until forced back.

It will be interesting to see if I have something similar with my new hip.

Hi Folks:
I had a ressurfancing in my left hip one year and half ago (may 2010).
It was wonderful till three months ago. I begin to fill a pain very similar to that before my ressurfacing, just when I walk more than 40 minutes or play futebol.
In normal activities, no pain.
But the frightening is that three days I heard a strange noise, like the grinding of metal, when I start walking and after a few steps it stops. The therapist commented that the anterior thigh muscles are very strong, and the back and glutes are weak. Anyone of you went through something similar?

Hi Oroberto,

Sorry that no one seems to have gotten back to you. However, you posted under Horse Back Riders... you may try again posted under another, more appropriate catagory. I'm sure some one else has gone through something similar. More importantly, have you seen your Dr? I would suggest that if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, a Dr visit is in order! Good Luck, Lu
