Colorado Doctors - who else does BHR besides Dr Rector?
« on: September 13, 2011, 01:41:47 AM »
I've seen Dr Rector, he's got a good reputation, but we did not 'hit it off'.  Who else is doing HR in Colorado?

Peter Lammens of Panorama Spine and Ortho has done some hip resurfacings, but nowhere near as many as Dr. Rector. Lammens has a great reputation. I had my initial consultation with Dr. Rector after having a consultation at Panorama. Dr. Rector said that Dr. Lammens is as good a surgeon as he is, but he just doesn't have as much experience with resurfacing. I can't say I hit it off with Dr. rector, but his reputation speaks for itself. I had lunch with a fellow who was Dr. Rector's sixth resurfacing, and he is doing great. Told me Dr. Rector did his wife's hip and his daughter's knee. I don't think you can find anyone better then Dr. Rector in Colorado.

My surgery isn't scheduled yet because Dr. Rector thought we still had some time. When the time comes, he'll be my surgeon. He's talented, very experienced with hip resurfacing and Boulder Community Hospital has build an entire resurfacing expertise to support him. It's not just the surgeon, it's the entire protocol and support system. Dr. Rector has it.

Thanks!  Just 'found' Lemmens and another doctor at Panorama, Jared Foran.  Given my mixed feelings with Rector, I think I will go meet these guys and see what they say.

Definately find someoen that you like and trust.  My 1st impression with Dr Rector was good but no bond.  He seems very German to me.  I used him and I am 6 Months out and doing great.  I was going to meet with Dr Dayton, but decided that I trusted Dr R, so no need.

Best of luck and let us know what you choose.

WTW15 - I would be hesitant to go to anyone who has not done at least a few hundred resurfacings. Better to go to someone who may be a little dry and sterile like Dr. Rector but who has tons of experience than to someone who is more out-going but has less experience. As much as it is important to like your surgeon, it is MUCH more important for this surgery that they have a lot of resurfacing experience.

I agree, Dr. Rector is a bit hard to hit it off with. I have been seeing him on and off for my hip for a couple of years and I feel the same way. He is always super professional, timely and straightforward - just not bustling with warmth.
I've heard good things about Lammens and Dayton but they don't come close to the number of resurfacings as Rector.

I am here in CO too but am going out of state for my surgery. I have a few reasons for this but I would have gone with Rector if I had decided to stay local.

Good luck!

MountainGoat, who are you going to?
I am not yet in a position to go out of state, but could consider it, if a few planets align  ;)

Anyone heard of Dr Cynthia Kelly?  There's also a doctor at Colorado Joint Specialists.  I know - and I trust - everyone's opinion on the more the dr has done, the better, but I have to keep exploring all the options.  I don't want to be a guinea pig but....

I think I am going to Dr. Gross in South Carolina but haven't totally decided. I'm having a hard time making a decision because at the moment the injections I got in September haved helped a ton and although I know they won't last its hard to swallow the idea of such a major surgery when I am not in terrible pain (for now).
I wouldn't even think of Dr. Kelley. Not that I have ever heard anything bad about her but merely because I haven't heard anything about her at all - that is the point. I am sure she has not done more than 100 of these and that is really not enough in my opinion. Dr. Dayton at Denver Health has done the second most resurfacings in CO behind Dr. Rector. He has a good reputation and I would talk with him before considering anyone else in the state.

Dr. Rogerson in WI is also an excellent hip resurfacing surgeon and is a bit closer to you if you want a BHR.  He has the same rehab as Dr. De Smet in Belgium.  He gets you into water therapy soon after surgery.  He is very pro resurfacing.

I haven't heard much about Dr. Kelley.  I did in the begining, but I don't think she has been doing many BHRs.

Dr. Dayton is my surgeon and today is actually the 4 year anniversary of getting my BHR.  I've had great results and am now in the best shape of my life.  I workout 5-7 days a week including lots of running, lifting, and crossfit-type exercises.  My hip does get sore occasionally, but so do other parts.  I ran my first 5k a few weeks ago and am looking forward to doing more of them and want to run the Bolder Boulder in the spring. I'm very happy with my results.

I just got off the phone with Dr Kelly's office.  I have an appointment for 12/23.  Her office advises me she continues to do HR and averages 5/month, since starting them in 2006.  Just my rough estimate, that puts her around 300.  She does Birmingham.

I will follow up on this post and provide updated information on her once I have my appointment.  If she's not the right surgeon for me, I will see Dayton next.  Financially I am just not able to travel to have the surgery, so it's here in Colo or not at all, and the way my symptoms have been increasing lately - in an exponential curve - I have to do something soon.

I would still see Dr. Dayton even if you like Dr. Kelley. I have talked to a lot of people in Colorado who have had resurfacing and I don't know a single person who has gone to her. I'm not saying she is not a good surgeon but honestly 300 surgeries these days isn't all that many when Dr. Rector and Dr. Dayton have done close to 600.

I'm glad things are moving forward for you. It seems to take forever to get all the preliminaries out of the way, but it is time well spent. You need to be comfortable with your decision. I heven't heard much about Dr. Kelly, but do know she attended one of the recent foreign conferences along with Dr. Rector to see how others were approaching hip resurfacing. That's a good indicator of her interest in the procedure. I hope you like her and can get a surgery date. Feeling your condition deteriorate without having a solution is the most depressing stage of this whole OA thing. Once you find a surgeon you have confidence in, and have a date for surgery, you will be anxious and very nervous, but you will no longer have the feeling of helplessness.

I'm 8 days from my surgery and walk better over short distances Now then before the operation. I need nothin for pain. Some Hippys helped me through a tough day yesterday and today was a breakthrough day. As TinSoldier said, the clouds parted and the sun shined in today. No pain! First time in more then three years I have been able to sit or lay and relax without feeling any pain in my hip. I never thought I would experience that again. No pain. You'll be there soon WTW. Look forward. Let me know if I can help you.
