Bowling Problems!?
« on: December 14, 2011, 02:48:15 AM »
Hello Everyone!

I did a search for bowling...not a thing found, so I'll ask from scratch.  Anyone do any bowling about 2-3 months into recovery?  If so, any problems?  I'm by no means a serious bowler, but have been asked about the possibility of bowling for New Year's Eve.  I'm right handed and the right hip has the new hardware.

Any experiences shared would be appreciated.

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

During my recovery, Dr. Su had a limitation of not carrying anything over 20 pounds for the first three months then not carrying anything over 50 pounds from three months to six months.
A bowling ball doesn't weigh over 10 pounds but the weight is concentrated on one foot when you release (in addition to rotating the pelvis), so the load is doubled on that side.  Could be a problem.
What does your Dr. advise?

Hello Steve!

Thanks for the reply.  Not sure what happened the first time around, but I did a BOWLING search again with positive results...including your input about weight and melting point of bowling balls on another planet!  Very interesting!

I wasn't terribly keen on the New Year's Eve bowling outing anyway.  Sure do miss the "Channel Bowl Cafe" breakfasts though.

Thanks, Bruce

Could you guys go to a Candlepin Bowling Alley?  That would potentially relieve any problems as the ball is much smaller and lighter.  Just a thought.

Hello PistolPete!

Not sure what that is!?  Only one bowling facility in Juneau, Alaska and it is full sized.  Is Candlepin kind of like "Whiffle" bowling?

Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Bruce,

Candlepin is fairly popular in New England.  The ball and pins are much smaller.  The ball is about the size of a softball and the pins are quite skinny.  We use to play a lot as kids.
