All The Threes - Mr McMinn Reaches 3333rd BHR Milestone

24th January 2012

On Tuesday, Mr McMinn reached a momentous milestone in his surgical career –
implanting his 3,333rd Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. To mark the occasion, Mr
McMinn invited colleagues from The McMinn Centre, Smith & Nephew and The BMI
Edgbaston Hospital for an impromptu shindig at Bindles Brasserie in Worcester.

"I was so thrilled and surprised to reach this landmark number, I just had
to go out and celebrate with colleagues who have made this all possible,” Mr
McMinn commented. “The fact that my patients are doing so well and that the
BHR has a 97% success rate at 14 + years in my practice, is a tremendous
reward for everyone involved in this development."

The news comes at a crucial juncture as more and more patients are demanding
highly experienced surgeons to perform their hip procedures. Before dinner,
Mr McMinn gave a short presentation about the history and success of the BHR
and the future of hip arthroplasty.

The milestone precedes another exciting occasion on the 2012 calendar – the
15th Year Anniversary of the BHR, which we will be reporting on this summer.

This is a perfect example of a surgeon that does not end up with metal ion issues in his patients.

WHY?

Because folks, he gets his angles correct, the device works as it's designed, it's not because people in England are less sensitive to metal ions either.

Look at the leading surgeons, show me where they have patients with the metal ion issue.

Pick a good surgeon, not one that says he's good, or because your Grandmother got a THR from him, pick someone with hundreds of surgeries with very low revision rates.

Very timely post Pat.

Thats very true Chuck. I have seen it writen that some surgeons implanted cups at steep angles because it replicated the natural anatomy. But these devices were designed to be implanted in certain angles.

Danny,

Next time you talk to your surgeon ask him about all the hips he has had to revise because of the metal ion issue, or better yet, ask him what he thinks about the MOM devices and ask him how bad they are for giving off the ions.

Why does your doctor not have issues such as metal ions?

Chuck last time I spoke to him he told me very proudly he has never had to revise on of his patients due to a misplaced cup. Thats in the 7000+ operations he's carried out. I'm sure as Mr Mcminn has, he will of had a revision because of metal sensitivity but I'm sure it will be around the same frequency as Mr Mcminn as in very very low. I think Mcminn had 10 in 3000+.
I think as I know you do the revision rate is incredibly low when the surgeon does there job properly!

That is an interesting comment about the natural hip having higher angles.  The comment that Dr. Pritchett made about my hip was that I had a high angle.  I forget what number he threw out but I seemed like it was 60 degrees.

My implant is at about 39 degrees.

I honestly have`nt a clue which sizes I have as didn`t cross my mind even to ask! I just knew was
fortunate enough to be in my opinion in the best possible hands! Found Derek McMinn friendly, professional,
calming. All his staff are so helpful too. May God Bless him.

Danny,

I wish you would sing this to the mountains my friend.  NO REVISIONS.  PERIOD.  No metal ion issues because of the device, only because of metal sensitivity, not because of the MOM device.  No magic going on, just a great surgeon.

Yes, people will have metal sensitivity, but unless the device is planted at an improper angle metal ion issues just do not pop up out of nowhere.
