Getting back to climbing after revision surgery
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:59:43 PM »
Five weeks and four days after my revision surgery I started training in my home climbing gym. Today it's eight days later and I've completed four diffrerent training sessions, getting stronger each time. Here are some photos:

I'm still taking it easy, because I don't want to cause an impact on my new hip but I feel that by eight and a half weeks (two weekends more) I should have no problem beginning to climb outside.  I let you know how this progesses as time goes by.

Yeah, we built a small addition to our house especially for the gym.
Last Sunday (two months after surgery) I went climbing outside for the first time in more than six months. Before my revision surgery, the last two times I went climbing outside (in late July and October), I wound up in so much pain I could hardly walk for a week afterwards. With my revised hip everything's going just fine so far.

Hiking up to the routes with my daughter:

Climbing a 5.8 crack to face:

My daughter top roping the same route:

Climbing a 5.9 arete (the left leg is the operated one, see how good it works?):

All and all I climbed the 5.8, the 5.9, a couple of easy 5.10s and then set up an easier route for my daughter to lead. My new hip is taking it like a champ!

Impressive. And no pain or stiffness afterward?

Right after climbing I was loose as a goose, but I was a little bit sore when I went for my 3 mile walk after work on Monday. However, I have to say that the one hour plus commute I do to get to work makes me feel stiffer than all that climbing! Driving in the car for long periods of time really stiffens me up still.

Well that answers my question I posted on another thread.  Sweet, I'd like to get back into bouldering.  Maybe do a little this summer.

I am impressed - makes my outing to the REI climbing wall in Pittsburg seem tame!

Sorry for the blatant plug, and my blog is a definite conceit, but if anyone is interested in following my attempts to get back to climbing I'll be putting detailed information here
