Welcome Back

The Hip Talk Discussion Forum was hacked a few weeks back. It has taken me a long time to fix it. The only backup I could use was way back to April 2020. All members and posts up to that date are available. Anything newer has been lost. I am sorry, but that has been the only way to get things up and running again.

One week on from my brand new shiny hip
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:26:13 PM »
One week on from surgery and so glad to be here.  (Did have second thoughts waiting to go down to theatre but knew I wouldnít be able to face family, friends and fellow hippys).   Was able to have a resurfacing- I have male hips apparently which gave Doc more hip bone to work with.   First few days in hospital were a bit ropey, my blood pressure was very low so I kept passing out which hampered progress a bit.  Also didnít think Iíd ever be able to move my lead balloon leg unaided.  But the incentive to get home let me make enough progress to be able to come home by Sunday evening.  Then had a bit of a panic attack after I came home.  :(  Wound has been weeping a bit but nurse has checked daily and today I had the last of my staples out.  Relief.  Still feeling a bit dippy and tired and leg is quite sore and swollen but mobility is far better, just have to keep concentrating when using the crutches and getting around, sitting and in and out of bed.

Really glad to hear that Ruby, Mike and Sal are all making progress and all the best to anyone else out there going through or waiting for surgery.  Thank you for all the advice, support, information, and humour, I would have been even more scared and confused without it.

Onwards and upwards.

You've had your staples out already?! Wow. Mine can't come out until the 23rd August. I can't wait to be honest, they're pinching me like no one's business!

Ka
Great to hear you are on the road to recovery.  Everyone seems to have a leg of cement after surgery.  It takes a long time for things to get back to normal. It does it in little steps at a time.  In a few weeks, you will feel much better.  Just take it easy.  You need lots of sleep and/or naps.  Surgery takes a big toll on our whole body and emotions.

Keep in touch when you can.  Good Luck.

Hey Ka,

Sounds like you are getting on very well, my staples are due out on Tuesday, am envious of yours being out, 26 staples aren't very comfy to sit on! Had a low couple of days, but feeling a bit rosier now. As you say Ka, onwards and upwards. Hope you are all doing well, Ka, Mike, Ruby and Jono and anyone else who's just had their op.  congratulations, Jono, lucky that you got Mr Gaston to give you a BHR, he only offered me a THR saying that he only does the resurfacing on men under 55 who want to run, which I guess is your demographic!  Happy healing folks. Sal xx

Thank you all.  Just got to be patient I think and accept that each day is not going to be better than the last and just focus on the long term gains.  If I get one good night I'm disappointed that the next night isn't the same, have forgotten all the broken sleep I had post op because of the pain.  The swelling in the leg is amazing, if I hadn't seen a few people on the ward when I was in hospital with similar swelling I'd have been really worried.  Also the bruising is still coming out 10 days on!  Ah well.  Also found that my heel was getting a little sore but that using a 'flight pillow' underneath my heel in bed has helped.
Wound is still running v slightly in one place but nurse is pleased and yes I am glad to have the staples out.  Roll on Tuesday Sal.
Moving about is getting easier, its amazing how versatile a pair of crutches can be.  I've been told that I need to use them for 6 weeks post op to keep the weight off the hip so will be able to do cartwheels by then I reckon. :)

Thank you Sal, I am making progress.  Some days/nights better than others but I can definitely feel my mobility getting easier.  Leg still hard and painful but guess its only to be expected.  Went to the GP earlier in the week and he checked out my scar, I felt it was quite 'puckered' but he was ok saying that it was the underlying stitching that was causing this.  (not part of a staple that had been left in, as my paranoid brain was telling me).  Am going to try the bio-oil as it seems that this gets good results.

I saw some of your comments on Ruby's post, sorry you've not been well and had a bit of a rough time.  Still early days really, just need to remember that and take it easy when you need to and keep taking the meds if thatís what it takes to get you through.

Three week anniversary passed in a bit of a blur as it was my birthday, so have been spoilt.  Need to get back to normality this week and concentrate on exercises, diet etc.  I see youíve got a pool near to you, have you been yet? What sort of exercise will you be doing?  Iím going to be going for some rehab therapy later this month through work, so trying to build up my strength in readiness for that.

Hope September weather will be better and help us all feel that little bit brighter.

Hi Ka

Happy belated birthday!

My leg is hard too, and I think the bio oil is helping as the itching seems to calm down after application. I've taken to scratching the other side at the same pressure to check I'm not doing it too hard as have lost sensation temporarily around the incision.

Your rehab therapy sounds great, I'm on the physio list but will get one of the pool ladies from the hotel to instruct me in my exercises ticked in the book I purchased preop, by the hospital physios.  It could take 6 weeks until I get physio or it could be much sooner, who knows but I must keep plugging away gently. I am seeing good improvements.

Fingers crossed September is nice and bright! It's good we are all progressing together.

Sal x

Hi Ka,

I had my HR about the same time and agree with everything you say. I love your positive attitude.

I'm over 8 weeks post op now and have been having rehab therapy at a charity centre linked to my work.  I've been very lucky to have access to hydrotherapy, exercise programme and daily walks.  I can really see the improvement, just need to keep it up now that I am back home.

Really annoyed that I am still limping when I walk with no crutch.  And still very stiff when I get up from sitting for any period of time.   Most worrying though is that my other hip is now aching, I hope its because it has been worked hard and not because it has been biding its time and has now decided to speak out :(.

Have my follow up appointment with consultant on Friday so fingers crossed that x-rays etc. are ok.

Fingers crossed for you, ka...

Remember that the muscles in your non HR hip / leg were compensating for you during the bad times. This may just be them getting back into the right mode.

Eight weeks is still very early. Patience with it, I still had startup stiffness for months afterwards; concentrate on your gait, you don't want to have to unlearn bad habits.

Good luck on everything.

I also had start-up stiffness well past 8 weeks.  In fact, I played tennis for 1.5 hours yesterday, and today I'm getting some start-up stiffness.

You sound like your in just about the right place.  Time will pass quickly.  I do hope the other hip resolves...
