Hi Hippies,
I am booked in for a left hip re-surface with Dr Edwin Su in Manhattan in mid-Oct 2013. I was wondering, will I be OK to go through with my booked Christmas cruise (NYC to Bahamas - 9 nights) with my family? (wife and 2 infants).

I think that's roughly 9 weeks of recovery time.

Will I be OK? Or should I postpone the vacation?

Good choice of surgeon.

I think you should be fine - providing you don't have Captain Schettino at the helm and his questionable navigation causes you to abandon ship.

You will be just fine. I had my left hip done at HSS in November and they did a great job.
Only on crutches for a week. Worst case is you would be on crutches 4 weeks. Once you are off them you can do about anything. Then your rehab is a lot about keeping yourself FROM doing everything and listening to your post OP instructions.

I believe it will be reasonable that you can go. Just do not expect to be lifting your infants up - hopefully they are in a stroller - you will be on a lifting restriction. Now I don't know of infants at 50lbs (unless Shaq is their Dad), but you will want to avoid lifting even 20lbs and turning twisting repeatedly if they are squirmers. It will put some pressure on your spouse.
Also easy on the swimming but when you have 6 week xray clearance, you can do most things except repeated running / lifting
