Hi All:
I had my hip resurfacing surgery with Dr. Su on May 17th at HSS in New York. Its going on 10 weeks post op and everything is going great. Dr. Su is truly a great surgeon and the Hospital for Special Surgery was fantastic.
I had surgery on Friday and went to my first PT session at HSS on Monday. I really recommend the Joint Mobility center at HSS for your first PT sessions as they really know what they are doing. When I got back home and started PT I really felt that they didn't have any experience with hip resurfacing and spent too much time working on strengthening vs a balanced approach with lots of stretching. For me getting flexible has geen the biggest single challenge so far, I really have to work at it.
I was dring my car after 10 days out of the hospital and walking with no assitance at 3 weeks.
I can't overemphasis the benefist of icing with ice packs. I did it 4 or 5 times a day and it really made a difference to the speed of my recovery.
At 4 weeks I started back on my road bike doing 10 miles at a time and at 8 weeks began swinging my golf clubs again.
Most of the people I have talked to have never heard of hip resurfacing...a real shame that more Orthopedic specialists don't promote it.
In terms of insuranace, I was out of net work on a PPO plan. The insurance Company Harvard Pilgrim has been great.
After covering my deductible and coinsurance everthing else has been covered by the insurance Company. They certainly performed better than expected.
If you have any reservations or second thoughts about Dr. Su I would put them aside, not only is he an extremely skilled surgeon but he has alot of passion for the work he is doing.
For me it has been life changing...all the best with your surgery!
