So I totally wiped out on ice today...
« on: February 20, 2014, 09:43:43 AM »
Stepped outside of my humongo apartment complex, saw what I thought was some ice just outside of the doors, and being a New Englander, chuckled, scoffed a bit and gingerly stepped on the sidewalk.

Of course it was a sheet of ice that was melting on top. Essentially the coefficient of friction on my winter hiking boots went from 1 to 0 in no time flat (I could show you the math) and then to negative since I was airborne (when drag coefficient came into play).

The point of this is that the moment I went airborne I wasn't thinking "Holy cow, my hip!!!" since I was sideways and was going to land on it, but "Holy cow, this is gonna hurt!!!"

and in fact it did. I hit hard (I am not a lightweight, and I was carrying a large gym bag).

I got up, slid / walked to my car, drove to the management office in a huff and told an innocent (as far as I know) maintenance guy about my adventure. Just didn't want to have a mom carrying an infant to have the same.

So at 3+ years, even instinctively, the hip is not continually on my mind. This would have called for it, since I did land on it and am a bit sore now, but it is just normal soreness.

So for our hippies who have just started and those considering it (our older hippies probably know what I'm talking about), normality comes back even in your reflexes.

I'm looking forward to seeing the multiple colors on my hip.

Good thing about your implant, it's fairly buried inside you so the more meat you have the better, I had that happen the winter after my surgery and I was good to go, a little sore but my implant was good.

Glad to hear you are ok.

Glad to hear you are okay. I am surprised your slip didn't happen yesterday. It was an ice rink in my driveway. This winter...

Ouch Hernanu.  I do feel your pain.

I was skiing on Monday in Western NY.   Was carving some nice turns on very hard packed snow (what they call ice out West) and I looked up to admire how pretty the ice on the trees looked.  Boom... I caught my edge and went down hard on my hip. One of those falls that jar your whole body.  Of course this always happens under the chair lift.   I got back up, gathered my pride, and continued down the mountain.  Very minor bruise on the hip area and my back is a little sore today but no problem with the hip.

I hope you heal and we do not have to deal with ice for much longer this year.

Yup, it's fine... sore a bit, but not bad at all. Also hope we don't have to deal with this hard packed snow any more.

Glad you are OK Hern. I am your neighbor being a New Englander too and my hip was tested out a few weeks ago. It passed with flying colors. I was carrying a bag of garbage out to the curb. It had just snowed lightly the night before so the ground was covered. As I stepped onto the street my legs began to do a split as it was sheer black ice under the snow. For sure I was going down but it happened so fast my instincts took over and somehow I was able stop the split and pull my feet back together lifting my body weight back up. My feet had been pretty far apart so imagine the force on my BHR to lift myself that way. Before the surgery I surely would have gone down and probably hurt myself in an awkward fall.

Thanks guys, the hip is fine, actually my wrist caught the worst of it (slapped it on the ground like I was taught in hapkido class), so no bench presses for a day or two.

True chuck, us New England types are so graceful.

luann... I'll work on it, will have to use vectors and who wants to do that...

I may post a picture or maybe write a poem to describe it...

I think many of us will have "fall stories" this winter. I took a flying tumble a few weeks ago - not outside, but during my dog training class- we were doing a fast pace when suddenly I was flying through the air! Luckily I landed on my non-surgical side because I landed right on my hip, which was quite sore for several days, along with my shoulder and my knee. My dog thought it was quite exciting that mom was " playing with him" on the floor :)
