UK Surgery
« on: April 10, 2014, 01:12:15 PM »
Had my hip resurfaced exactly 5 years ago, and in fact had my final x-ray today, and blood test!
All seems fine and i am very happy with my 5yr old hip. Problem is my other hip is starting to get quite painful as expected.
My local hospital has now stopped doing Hip Resurfacing opps. but for me its definitely the right way forward. I am only 47 and have a lot of activity left in me yet, not to mention my active job in construction and skydiving hobby.
Does anyone know of  the best, or a recommended surgeon in the uk who are still doing these opps? I have read the articles around the Lancet report and also Dr  Gross's response with great interest.

Hi Dave there are still many surgeons doing BHR's in the uk. But your best bet is to go to the royal orthopeadic in Birmingham and see Mr Treacy. Failing that there's  Mr O hara, and many other top surgeons there!

Well i have seen my GP and have to go through the system of seeing a local  Triage physio or hopefully surgeon as part of the assessment protocol.  And then take it from there. I guess if i am eligible i may get to see a top surgeon  :)

Hi Dave. I paid for a private consultation with Mr Treacy. He said I'm a good candidate for bhr.so then I got referd to him on the nhs at birmingham ortho.I havn.t had bhr yet but I'm on his books now, so when the time comes when I need the op I've just got to phone his secretary and not bother with my gp anymore.Initially my gp wasn't playing ball and had me booked in for a thr at a local hostpital but I persisted and got my own way in the end.Don't take no for an answer.

That's how I always advice people to do this as you actually get a proper consultation with HIM rather than a member of his team as is usually the case via the NHS.

Hi Dave,
Whereabouts are you in the UK?
If you're in London area I can fully recommend my surgeon Prof Cobb. Although, I had mine done privately with BUPA-the prof is high profile-hugely respected top orthopaedic surgeon at Charring Cross/Imperial NHS Trust and has always been huge advocate of HR. As I posted recently he did HR on Craig Revel Horwood.
Keep us updated

Hi Toby,
I live in Harrogate, so Birmingham is probably my best bet, however there maybe somewhere closer.
Had my last one here in Harrogate by a Mr Mitchell.
