radiation therapy to prevent hypertrophic bone formation
« on: June 10, 2014, 04:56:50 PM »
Had my second hip done yesterday along with first one done 4-29.  Because of my ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis my doc prescribed radiation therapy to prevent new bone formation.  So radiation to both hips now.  Anyone else have preventative radiation?  Thanks Jerry

suprised I have not had any responses.  I did not think the radiation treatment was that uncommon.

Afriend of mine had it when he had his second THR as he had problems with bone forming in his muscle after his first one. He was told it was quite rare and they would only give radiation if they know there was likely to be a problem. Hence no radiation with first THR.

I did not have the radiation, and did end up with a couple of small pieces of hetertrophic bone forming. They are small, so nothing too serious. I will at least ask my surgeon before my next hip.

It was a bit unusual for me to be on the receiving end of the linear accelerator.  I am a radiation therapist and have treated many of my ortho Dr's patients in the past few years.  He does not treat everyone but does use it on high risk patients like me.
