UK Hip resurfacing with Dr Nadi Kalap
« on: November 23, 2014, 05:47:21 PM »
Hello everyone.

Has anyone been operated on by Dr Nadi Kalap in the UK gloucester?

i have been suffering with pains in my hip for 3 years and finally decided to get it sorted, to my shock and surprise i was told i needed a hip replacement. However Dr Kalap has now decided that a hip resurface would be better. So....
Has anyone had hip resurfacing with Dr Kalap?

Im a 33 year old male who was in very good shape but over the last few years due to my bad hip have put on 3 stone so not in great conditon. I also want to get back to playing soccer but would be happy just been able to have a kick around with my son without firstly being in pain and not wanting to pass out due to being so unfit...

Any advice would be much appreciated...

Due to have surgery on 15th Dec 2014

Thanks

Standard surgeon questions apply. How many have they done with how many revisions and at what point. What were revisions for? What device do they use?

Personally with several of the worlds best resurfacing surgeons in the uk who are available on th NHS I personally wouldn't go with a lesser known surgeon.

Hi Phil,
Like Danny I too am a fellow UK hippy delighted with my HR.
I agree with Danny's advice re- the questions etc However, I am always encouraged with surgeons advocating/recommending HR particularly 'essential' recognising that you are a younger patient. I did a search on your surgeon and note that he has special interest/experience in arthritis in younger patients-did a fellowship in Bristol-so while I haven't heard him mentioned before some positives to consider too. Please follow Danny's guidance re- standard q's and get back to us.
Best Wishes

Hi. If I was in Gloucester I would go straight onto the M5 and head to Birmingham to the inventor of the BHR or his sidekick Ronan Treacy. It's a no brainer. I've emigrated but  from reading loads of posts on here you'll find the way to get to see Treacy on the NHS via some of the threads here. Gloucester to Birmingham is only an hour or so, I'd be in the car as soon as possible!!! 😉

Hi Guys,

Toby, Danny and MPH thank you very much for replying. I have manage to get a few answers to the questions you suggested and I am more than happy with the replys.

Dr Kalap has done just under 300 hip operations and over 125 this year. His main interest and where he has most experience is hip/knee surgery in young adults.

Just over a week to go till my op and I am very excited/nervous...i am hoping this will change me life around after over 3 years of pain...

Ill keep this thread updated about how it goes.

Good luck. Most people on here would say only get a resurfacing from a very experienced resurfacing surgeon, one who's done around a thousand or more seems to be the benchmark. They all do THR as well. Hope it all goes well.

If my situation wasnt so hard i might consider looking at it again however with time/work/family issues my op needs to be done before xmas....besides ive always got another hip ;-)

revision rate is good thats the one thing i look at and decide hes good to go...out of 129 operations 11 had to be revised...

i know what you both are saying but all surgeons at some point would have done less operations and people had to place their trust in them. after speaking to him again i trust him and know he will do a good job...positive thinking lol

again thanks for your posts guys...much appreciated

That revision rate shows to me that he is still defiantly still in the initial mourning curve. Around 14% if my pathetic maths is correct.

Good luck mate hope all goes well for you.

Phil,
Good luck with your hip resurfacing. Years ago when I was researching resurfacing a surgeon who had done 300 would be considered quite experienced (indeed mine had completed 250 at the point of my surgery). I did extensive research and it was considered that the learning curve for HR for an experienced hip surgeon is around 100 procedures. Indeed, McMinn, De Smet, Shiminn,et al were getting it right early on so there's no reason why newer surgeons shouldn't too. It's great that in the UK that we have surgeons like yours advocating HR- we need more like him and the fact that he has done 125 in the last year is excellent. Also, in recent years the knowledge of cup placement, device and patient selection etc  aids success rates even further. So you are right to put your trust in him.
Have a great surgery my UK friend.

8.5% revision could be very good if they are from earlier patients. It could be a much lower percentage for the last 50 for example. More positve thinking. ;D

Hey everyone

Sorry I havent posted in a while its been a very hard/hetic few weeks with Christmas etc...

Good news is my operation went very well, Dr Kalap is amazing and such a nice person he came to visit me every day while I was in hospital, apparently he does this to everyone he operates on which is more than most so Im told.

My scar is massive but very neat and tidy, even my sister (who sells medical devices for surgery) who is very fussy was impressed with my scar, its pretty much healed now.

It hasnt all been easy and the pain was some stages was very hard to deal with but this is normal in someone my age due to my good muscle tone. I am now walking without any aids for short distances and using 1 stick for anything further, my physio was very impressed with how well I am progressing and I am now doing more advanced movements and exercises. However I am having serious pains in my knee which has been operated on, i really hope its not anything serious....if anyone else had this issue any advice would be great.

Now i cant wait to get back into the pool and gym to get my fitness back and hopefully my life back to how it used to be 3 years ago...its been a long time coming.

Hope you all had a great xmas and an even better new years.

Phill

Hi Phill,
Delighted to be hearing from you and really happy that all is going well-your surgeon sounds like a great guy and as I said before, I have every confidence you will be delighted with your HR. We are very lucky to have such dedicated surgeons on the NHS.
Just want to make a few points:
Your scar is in its early stages and will become far less prominent so it's most likely smaller than you think.
When you say you are doing more advanced exercises what do you mean? because apart from lots of walking at your 2 week stage they should be just gently re-developing ROM (see Mcminn website) and as Pat always reminds new hippies it's not a race so take your time!
I limped for 10 years prior to my HR and my surgeon and physio told me to keep to the stick until I could walk perfectly-which I did after 7.5 weeks. At the time of my HR there were differing views, I consulted with gait specialists and many knowledgeable others, so again my advice don't rush it, sure a little walking unaided is ok providing no limp-you need to retrain your neuromotor system.
Take Care
Toby

Great news Phill. As said previous, don't rush things. I am just at the 3 month post op and up until now have been keeping things to just walks and my job as a joiner. Now I have just got in the gym and starting to push slightly, but always conscious of the joint in this first 6 months. Another thing I did this time around, compared to the last resurface, was consult a private physio. I always felt the nhs phisio's were too over worked and did not have enough time. Just my opinion though. Good luck :-)
