Doctor R Marchand RI in the United States?
« on: June 27, 2015, 08:47:50 AM »
HI All
Are there any patients out there who have had this procedure done with Dr R Marchand in RI in the US? I recently travelled 4 hours to see Dr E Su in NYC only to have him tell me that the damage was not sufficient enough to warrant surgery. Shortly after that I increased my activity level and now my hip is both numb and stiff and it clearly is sufferring from something.
Seems that the choices are limited in the New England area and this site does not have many doctors listed for New England at all?
Does anyone have anyinformation thatmight help me at all
Thank you for your time and I hope for some responses

Hi Gunners
I just put a Dr. Marchand section on the Hip Stories since I had 4 personal stories.

http://surfacehippy.info/hipresurfacing/stories/dr-marchand-stories

Hopefully, one of them might check in and talk with you.  Many times, people don't often check back once they are healed and off to a new and active life.  Can't blame them.  There are, however, some very supportive folks that stop by years after their surgeries.

I am very Thankful for those folks that come back to help others.  It is very kind of them to share their time.

Good Luck.

Hi Gunners, hip pain really sucks. We all know that here. You went straight to one of the top surgeons in the world with Dr. Su.
Since he did not prescribe surgery did he give you a firm diagnosis and information about dealing with your condition?

Hello Gunners, I had both hips BHR in July 09. Great results, no problems at all. Dr Marchand is the tops in New England. You may have to wait a long time to see him, he is in high demand. I am a very active 62 year old, road and mountain bike, kayak, hike, weight train, you name it, no issues. I have sent many to him over the years, all with great results. Contact me if you have specific questions.

Good luck

Thanks all three of you for responding
Pat I will look at those stories much appreciated
To answer your question Chuck no D r Su did not do any of that
He Xrayed me then explained that it did not look bad enough to consider surgery and to consider coming back in the future
Just to fill you in I have been renowned hip specialists about this issue for about 4 years now since a Dr M Kocher repaired my torn labrum in 2010
As soon as I went back to running and soccer It all flared up again. I have talked with doctors about Stem cells Minihip hip replacement you name it! Of all Hip resurface is the most appealing if I have to go there
Moe I will definitely contact Dr Marchard and SE where that takes me
I was really disappointed in Dr Su I thought finally I qualify for something and then it went south
Are you a runner? do you log miles now at all
Do you think your hip devices will last and sustain your activity level for the remainder of your years
Thanks all

I do not run, I ran seriously 20 years ago but I really am a cyclist. I also ran briefly after surgery without problems for a bit but I decided to put my energy elsewhere. There are many other hippies on here who do run. No one knows how long these devices will last ultimately but 6 years of good health is a good start. I believe the oldest in existence is almost 15-20 years.

Gunners you are in a tough spot like many find themselves - in pain but not qualified (yet) for a hip resurfacing. A torn labrum can be very painful but unless it is associated with advanced arthritis, surgeons are reluctant to perform resurfacing due to higher risk of failure.
Dr. Su will resurface patients that others turn away so it will be interesting to see what Dr. Marchand says. I wouldn't let him know what Dr. Su told you until after.

A good friend of mine was in the exact same boat you are. The surgeon made him wait with labrum pain. I think it was about two years before he felt enough arthritis had set in that it was time. What they don't explain is that as arthritis advances, the femur changes the way it supplies blood to the head and neck. These arthritic changes actually benefit success rate for the resurfacing patient.

Soccer is my thing and you will be able to return to playing as aggressively as you desire - but you have to work to restore those muscles. My friend who had to wait for his resurfacing runs three days a weeks and plays soccer two days so activity is limitless after resurfacing.

Gunners, you may want to send a PM to mmooney42 with some questions. He had a torn labrum issue and BHR with Dr Marchand last year.

:) Hi Gunners not sure of your age. Sounds maybe like FAI stuff,  and crook hip that will never come right. Been there done that. Surgery is the last resort however if that's what you wish for you may want to give it a go. Worked for me but like everyone that has been there there, there is risks and issues. But all that aside good surgeon is a very good start and to talk about it. This is a good place for that.
My lawyer today told me its great to see me walking normal after so long. Cheers K
