Driving after surgery on right hip
« on: October 07, 2015, 12:03:47 PM »
If you had resurfacing on your right hip -- how long until you felt comfortable driving? And how long before you were able to ride long distances?

Scheduled for Dec 11 with Dr Gross -- have a 9 year old that needs lots of chauffeuring around, and of course Christmas Break will be right after surgery.

Also wondering if I will be comfortable making a 6-7 hour drive home for Christmas ...

I was driving to work at three weeks, and can't recall but pretty sure I was driving, contrary to what surgeon would recommend, at two weeks. Right hand drive, manual.

I think 3 to 4 weeks after surgery was my effort. I think I could have driven earlier than that but was away from home during surgery.

In the UK you also have to consider whether your car insurance is still valid if you drive too soon after surgery. On checking mine it basically says that as long as surgeon has given you the all clear then you are covered. No sure how it works elsewhere.

My surgeon has basically said 4-6 weeks before I can drive.

Thanks! I am really hoping for within a couple of weeks ... but sounds like it might be better to plan for a little farther out ...

Driving a manual ... impressive. At least mine is an automatic.

Never really thought about the insurance thing...

Manual transmission, left hand drive here.  I had my right hip resurfaced on January 5th of this year, made one short drive to the grocery store 9 or 10 days later, and resumed driving myself the 35 miles each way for work on January 21.  I had my left hip resurfaced on March 2nd (and a couple vertebra fused on March 4th), and drove myself to and from my follow-up appointment on March 13th, 240 miles each way, but took an extra week off work the second time around.  I figure a total of 5 weeks for two hips and a neck surgery ain't bad.
