I need help from fellow hippys!
« on: November 13, 2015, 04:02:41 PM »
Hi Everybody

I posted my story and a brief question a couple weeks ago.

I had bilateral Bhr by Dr Pritchett in Seattle 2 years ago. My recovery has gone well. Hike, bike, manual labor, no problems.

After my physical therapy was over really slacked on my stretching and hip strengthening exercises. For the most part ot was no problem. Went to gym everyday and did cardio...walk on treadmill at an incline, stair climber, anything to get a good sweat. And that is pretty much been my daily work out for the last 2 years.

Occasionally I would have some weakness, or slight discomfort in my glute, hip, low back area. I would tell my self "I really should start stretching more, and strengthening my hip muscles.

Back in September I was having one of those thoughts. So this time I decided I was going to do it. So I made a weight lifting plan that includes squating, and deadlifting and other lower body lifts. I lifted lower body every Friday for about a month. After about the second week I was feeling pretty weak, but I figured "hey its been 2 years, no reason not to push it."

But now I am dealing with an injury. I am not sure exactly what it is. Sometimes I am sure it is my low back/top of butt, sometimes it feels bad in the front of my hip at the very top of my thigh.
I wasn't lifting really heavy weights.

I became worried. Made an appointment with Dr Pritchett, he took x rays. Says implant looks perfect. I asked him about the dreaded Metal allergy. He told me it is not that, he said it is very unlikely in my situation (large boned male, perfect placement, no squeaking or grinding)

Dr Pritchett said probably just a muscle strain. Would get better with time. But it hasn't gotten better. So I saw my general Dr. He said a similar thing. Prob just a muscle injury that would get better with time. Still not better.

Its been nagging me for a month and a half. I am going to start some physical therapy on Monday to see if it helps.

The pain is definitely worse in the morning and gets much better as the day goes on. Hurts mostly when I bend at the waist. I am 6'6" so doing little things like bending to flush toilet, or doing dishes are most painful. I also have 2 little kids, so picking up toys is also aggravating.

I have exhausted the message board search, and google looking for answers.

I have come to the conclusion its probably one of 4 things.

Hip flexor strain
Hip bursitis
A low back injury
Or...metal reaction  (although Dr Pritchett says this is very unlikely) its still on my mind.
I would be more worried about the metal allergy if this hadn't coincided with my weight lifting.

Anyway. I have contacted my surgeon. I have seen my general Dr, I am going to PT.

What I am looking for from you guys is advice, tips, assurance that I will be ok 😊.

This sight has been a great help for many, including me. So thank you.

Please help.

Rob

What do your metal #s look like? It has been two years, so why not get them tested.

The onset of your pain coinciding with new exertion makes it look like a muscle issue, though.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I've had pain in the upper hamstring/glute area for a couple of months. Particularly when I'd straighten up after bending forward, but generally after any physical activity. Not exactly your problem, but maybe similar. I eventually figured out the problem was my quads were too tight. It tilts the pelvis forward and over stretches the hamstring.

I've put extra focus on stretching the quads and it's really helped. I've also been going for therapeutic massage, which has also been very helpful.

Sounds like a strain or perhaps you broke through too much scar tissue at one time. That might take some time to settle down. Look up ART (Active Release Therapy) for someone who can do that in your area. It's a physical therapy technique that would help resolve the issue.

I haven't had any metal test. Dr Pritchett told me it was not necessary. I will however get them checked if this goes on much longer.

None of my symptoms sound like that of metal allergies.

Doesn't mean its for sure not metal problem. Just Dr Pritchett said not very likely.

Thanks for the ideas Chuck. I have defiantly committed to doing more stretching.

Also, it doesn't hurt to walk, or even to squat. It only hurts to bend at the waist.

And it definitely improves as the day goes on.

But always back to square one in the morning.

I can handle what ever it is, its the not being able to figure out the problem that drives me nuts.

Hey Jumpman75, stretching is good and I did a lot of it during my recovery and still do lots of it today. But all your stretching won't do what Active Release Therapy does. They don't show you how to stretch, it is a pressure point manipulation done by the certified therapist. It is slight related to how a chiropractor might manipulate your back only it can be applied different place of the body including the hip.
Some on this forum talked it up and so I sought out an ART therapist and it has helped me resolve other musculoskeletal issues in addition to improving the function of my resurfaced hip.

I agree it is very unlikely you have a metal issue, but some doctors start metal ion testing two years out, so you could have the test done and put your mind at ease.

:) Hi Jumpman........ Find a local physio therapist that will measure the strength of the Ilipsoaos, External rotators, Internal rotators and adductors.... Why to logically rule out which area it is coming from.
To rule out a strain (tendon or muscle tendinitis) .
Then maybe your back. an MRI to see you have not degenerate disc's in the lower level, or someone real experienced at back stuff for a start.
I think you are on the right track mostly from what I have found if it is the back it will get better as they day goes on if they are degenerate disc's.
If muscle strain same gets better but stiff first.
Tendinitis seems to get better under heavy loading and takes a while to rebuild. Maybe you also are in this bracket. Hard for months at first loading.
Be confident The specialist said it looks really cool it probably is. Can get a metal test but that may take you down the wrong track. 1 in 1000 people get metal allergy.
Keep at it and eliminate the easy ones.
The hip is the most massively hardest joint to work out due to its massive muscle strength, position, and direction. Find out what may aggravate it. Good luck I wish you all the best.
Keep asking this forum. Cheers K

:) Hi jump man again. Another thing to look for is calcification of tendons, Rectus Femoris maybe you can get an ultrasound of this. This can also cause issues. Cheers K

As I am trying to diagnose myself via the internet...(I know a dangerous thing) some of the symptoms of scatica seem to fit for me...

Have any of you experienced sciatic nerve problems?

:) Hi Jumpman. Try the thing back first. You have been 2 years out so I would tend to think it should be a new thing unless you have had it along the way..... Yes you can get some sciatic things form the hip surgery Piriformus syndrome stuff. Cheers K.
