Taking heparin Shots in Carry on in Belgium?
« on: July 18, 2016, 11:15:03 AM »
I am posting for Karen in Belgium, just had her hip resurfacing with Dr. De Smet. If you have an answer, I will send it to her.

I was wondering if you know anything about carrying on heparin shots? I can't find anything on TSA about it-only insulin. I will have 7 more to bring home and hate to put them in my checked luggage in case it were to get lost. Have you heard recently from any other patients about this? I do have the letter from Dr. De Smet, but with all the heightened security these days I worry if they will even care that I have a letter.

A point of clarification: If flying out of Belgium, the first concern should be Belgian security rules. Do the Belgians allow it? Second, when leaving Belgium is it a nonstop flight to her destination? In other words, will she even be dealing with TSA? If she is dealing with TSA the short answer is it shouldn't be a problem. According to TSA's website labeled and declared liquid medications may exceed the 100ml threshold. Preloaded syringes are also allowed, but must be declared. You can search for preloaded syringes on their website.

"TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip, but you must declare them to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection.
We recommend, but do not require, that your medications be labeled to facilitate the security process"

Hi Karen:

I had a very long flight home two and a half years ago (Brussels to New York then New York to Buenos Aires) and needed a shot in transit We showed the certificate that De Smet gave us to the security people. They took it somewhere and talked with some other people and let us get on the plane with the shots

Good luck with your surgery, mine is doing great!

:) I think to Pat the last Herpin shot is 48 hour dose so probably not to worry about it they are very good.
Cheers Karl

Posted for Karen

Hi Pat,
I'm back in Austin and had no issue with security and the Heparin shots. We actually just put them in a carry-on bag and did not mention them and no one said anything about wanting to check the bag further in either Brussels or Washington DC. So, don't know if they didn't see them, or saw them and didn't care.
Thanks again for posting for me and if you want to put this message online or can thank those who responded to me that would be great too.
I'm now a little over 2 weeks post-op and easily getting around with one crutch.
Thanks again for running the website. It's a big help to all us Surface Hippies!
