Prof. Yates of Australia Evaluates 2010 National Registry Info

Prof Yates of Australia sent me several of his studies.  I am posting a link to a copy of his paper -

We need real information to evaluate the outcomes of hip resurfacing and Prof Yates has done an excellent job of analyzing the 2010 information.

Prof Yates contacted me with his info and offered me the use of his presentations.

Pat, thanks so much for posting this. It is wonderful to have such a large data sample, and with such a thorough discussion. It is things like this that make this site so valuable to so many people.

Good paper. Didn't particularly like reading about the revision rates of folks with less than 50mm head size who also have developmental dysplasia. Also realize that I've been sexist when talking about small boned females when I should have been referring to small boned people.

Here's what I think is really fantastic about Prof. Yates' study: It affirms that the overall retention rate for the BHR at 8 years is about 96% (94% at 10 years in the 2011 numbers). But what was really encouraging to see, was in that small 4% who required revision -- fewer than 1/3 ended up with a THR! That is remarkable!

Bottomline, what this says to me is: if you go to a well skilled surgeon... the odds that you'll end up with a THR revision in the first decade after BHR surgery, are miniscule!

That is something to celebrate and share with anyone who came to the crossroads many of us have.

I just wanted to add that the 2011 Australian Registry Information which I posted here

gives the 6.3% revision rate for BHR at 10 years.  It is one year newer than the information Prof. Yates was reviewing.  So the outcomes are still doing well and again, it depends on whether you are a large man/woman or smaller man/woman.  I just use the overall retention rate which I will now have to change to 94% according to the newest statistics from Australia.  The UK surgeon series like McMinn and Treacy are much higher.

Info from the Smith & Nephew meeting in AZ April 2011 below:

McMinn/Treacy series at 10 years - BHR suvivorship is 99.74%

The Oswestry Registry at 5-8 years for 58 surgeons in 8 countries - not including McMinn/Treacy, for 679 hips is 95.7% at 8 years.

The Swedish Registry 2008 reports at 7 years BHR survivorship all ages is over 98.8%

Still great outcomes for the right candidates.

Amazing but not surprising outcomes for the Swedish registry. My husband is Swedish and talk about big bones and dense. Don't mean to sound culturally insensitive or biased but.....I'm glad that my son inherited his Viking bone stock.

I found a little more information from my notes:

Canadian Joint Registry shows the incidence of hip resurfacing in Canada to be 3.5% of all captured hip replacement operations in 2010.  This compares to 7.6% for the Australian Registry and 7% for the National Joint Registry in the UK.  Data on 2790 hip resurfacings from the Canadian Hip Resurfaicng workgroup from 2002 to 2008 showed an overall 5 year suvivorship of 96%.  For men under the age of 65 with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis the five year suvivorship was 97.5%.  the five year survivorship for women was 93.7%.  The incidense of pseudotumors was 0.09% (3/3400)
