Perhaps one of the reasons for Dr. Gross's conservatism is the issue of bone-ingrowth? (Since he doesn't use cement on the femoral side.) I'm sure it's addressed elsewhere on this site. Certain things over the first few months for a cemented component might not be as advisable for an uncemented one. I know I would probably be more careful (or rather, SHOULD be more careful...sigh...)

Good points Mike, but remember all cups pretty much are press fit and use no cement, they rely on bone ingrowth.  The femoral component Dr. Gross uses is also press fit and relies on bone ingrowth which to me is a more natural way of doing an implant, at least I am banking my hip on that  ;-)

Prior to 6 months patients stand a good chance of femoral neck fracture

Chuck, you are correct. I never questioned what you meant. But for the readers here considering hip resurfacing I thought that statement needed some further discussion. If my surgeon told me that I stood a good chance of fracturing my hip after resurfacing surgery, it certainly would give me pause.

"Prior to 6 months patients stand a good chance of femoral neck fracture"

Yes, if you pick and choose a few words from the paragraph that I wrote one might think it's true, but I was talking high impact exercise before 6 months, and yes, if everyone started playing basketball at 2 months post op the stats would change.

Please stop picking and choosing a few words from a paragraph.   I would certainly like people to shy away from high impact exercise prior to 6 months, even if it takes me writing paragraphs that you chose to cherry pick.

Really  interesting comments and discussions here. As a Triathlete -62yrs-, about to have a LHBHR procedure ,so I'm keen to gather all the info and pros and cons about getting back into my sport - at top level. Really interested about the Run part of it , as I guess you may class this as "high impact sport ". My run distances are only 5km and 10km long . Am looking at doing alot of aqua jogging to keep up my "run" efforts , plus some soft grass and maybe soft type sand running. Am able to have about 5 - 6 months off racing , before competing again. July operation and Racing in mid/late January, 2015.  ;) Am grateful for any feedback etc you may have.Cheers. Kiwi Boyo.

Some docs will want you to wait up to a year, most 6 months before running on your new hip, after that you virtually will have zero chance at a neck fracture.  Most docs preserve the neck capsule which helps with results.

Working out in water is a great way to rehab btw.

Hey Jerry,

Just going back to your golfing, thats a fantastic achievement to be playing 18 holes so soon, cant help but compare as our  resurfaced hips  share the same birthday  ;).

There's no way  i could be doing that distance walking never mind swinging  a club with it!  Do you mind me asking what shape you were in before hand/ age etc?

Best of luck with the other hips,  hope it goes as well as this one and your back on the course in a few more weeks

Cheers

Hey Nigel  Good to hear from you!  I am 54 yrs old and in I would say average middle aged guy shape.  Golf has been my main form of exercise for many years.  I do walk a lot at my job as well.  Thanks for the encouragement on the golfing!  I am nowhere near golfing at 100 percent power but just being on the course was therapy for me.  Off to surgery again on Monday to fix the left one.  Jerry

Hi Chuck , '
Thanks for the reply. Looks like I will have to 'ease up ' on my goal of serious running , come Jan 2015. Certainly am going to do alot of rehab in the pool though , via Swimming and Aqua Jogging. Will consult with Specialist as well . Cheers , Kiwi Boyo.  :)

Thank you very much Mike.  Only spent 1 night in hospital this time!  Surgery went well.  Dr. said there were so many bone spurs in acetabulum that the joint was nearly fused.  There were even small chunks of broken off spurs floating around in there!  Guess that explains why that hip was worthless on the golf course.  Jerry

Good luck on #2, we need to have a surfacehippy golf outing, maybe Pat can be our beer cart girl.   ;D

Congratulations! As you know, next few days are the hardest, but now that you are on the other,  other side, it gets nothing but better.
