Travel Restriction Question

I had my second hip resurfaced almost 2 weeks ago. I've been told that I should not fly for 30 days after surgery due to risk of blood clots (am taking aspirin twice daily for the first 30 days).

My question is this: I'm scheduled to fly coast to coast on my 30 day anniversary and am wondering if anyone has had shorter or longer travel restrictions. Or if going coast to coast makes a difference from what you have heard from your surgeon. I'll plan to get up and walk around during the flight.

Thanks for any feedback or input on this topic!

Hey Chris - I'll give you my experience with travel after my HR. I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr Brooks of the Cleveland Clinic on 2/26/18. I flew to Hawaii about 3 1/2 months later, which for me was about a total of 10 hours of flying. 6 hours on the first leg, 4 hours on the second leg. I don't remember my surgeon giving me any firm guidelines as to what would be "too early" to fly, he just said he was OK with me taking that trip and recommended that I take an aspirin the day before, the day of, and the day after the flight/s. I had no problems. I know that there are people that fly to and from this surgery so it obviously can be done. I'm sure your surgeon can speak to it for you.

Best of luck.

Many resurfacing patients have flown well prior to 30 days, since their surgeons were remote to them, including Europe. I flew back from my first resurfacing surgery some 15 years ago, about 2 hours from south carolina to new york. I think that as long as you remain on the aspirin protocol, and make sure you move around on the flight itself, you will be fine.

After both of my surgeries, one ten years ago and one almost 4 months ago, I flew from South Carolina back to Idaho which involves three flights over about a 10 hour period. Both times I waited about 5 days after surgery, but Dr Gross was not worried about me flying back after just two days, and had no concerns at all about five days. I believe this is common for his patients. The first time I also flew to Hawaii at six weeks post surgery, which had me on a plane for almost 6 hours, again with no restrictions from the doctor. At three months this time I flew from Seattle to New York, with no problems or concerns. I was on blood thinner injections the first time for about a month, and aspirin the second time.
