I'm 47, living in France... A year and a half ago I was told that THR was necessary, but I've taken my time in trying to improve my understanding of what this would mean.  My problem stems from an old injury (at the age of 21) which left my hips "out of line" slightly, but with no pain.  Three years ago, while exercising, the hip seemed to "pop" further out of place, with pain and immobility increasing ever since.  Lots of arthritis there now, it would seem, and not much cartilage left....  My reading and research has led me, recently, to hip resurfacing, which seems the perfect option to regain mobility, a normal life for my age (!) and less risk of dislocation.  I've sent my x-rays to Dr Koen De Smet in Belgium, as I haven't found anyone here in France with a comparable reputation.  I'd be pleased to hear from anyone with a similar history of hip problems....  Thanks!

Hi Jane

I am not as young as you or have the same type of problem.  I was 61 when I had my left hip resurfaced with Dr. De Smet.  I have osteoarthritis and was in a  great deal of pain. My hip was bone on bone with several cysts.  I could not walk, do any activities or sleep without pain.  It got to the point where even the medicines would not help at night.  I have the problem for about 10 years because I did not want a thr.  Then I learned about hip resrufacing and did not have health insurance. Could not afford surgery in the US. So I contacted Dr. De Smet in Belgium and Dr. Bose in India. Two of the very best hip surgeons in the world. I choose De Smet because 8 1/2 hours of flying sounded better than 22 - 28 to get to India.

Jane, you are still very young and should have a hip resurfacing if possible.  You research has lead you to a good conclusion to get a hip resurfacing if possible.  It is bone conserving since it doesn't cut off your femur bone and there is almost no possiblity of a dislocation. You can be as active as you want.

I have my whole story written in my book about my experience in Belgium with Dr. De Smet. It is a free download http://www.surfacehippy.info/belgium&mybhrebook.php  That might give you a good idea what to expect.  I also have many stories from De Smet patients here http://www.surfacehippy.info/hipstories.php

I hope that gives you a start.  Please keep us informed and let us know if you have any other questions.
