Hi
Welcome to Hip Talk.

I don't have any specific doctors listed for MA, but you have 2 very experienced hip resurfacing surgeons in your area - Dr. Su in NY and Dr. Clarke in NY

http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php#New_York

I normally try to keep only really experinced hip resurfacing surgeons on my list and also post their stats for a reference.

As you probably know, there is a steep learning curve for hip resurfacing and most problems occur in the first 100 - 200 surgeries.  You can see the medical studies on the main website.

The current revision rate for the BHR is now at 4% since the US doctors have joined the rest of the world.  The overall revision rate was 99.9% before then.  So 4 out of 100 people will have problems.  To make sure you are not one of them, choose a doctor that has done hundreds of surgeries and are past the learning curve.

It certainly sounds like you are ready for a hip.  You might want to consider consultating with several of the really experienced surgeons since you have special problems.  The more difficult your hip and health problems are - the more you need the really experienced surgeons.

We have a few in the US that have done over 1000 like Dr. Gross and Dr. Amstutz.

Many of us have traveled to Dr. De Smet in Belgium  who has done over 3000 and Dr. Bose in India who has done over 1000.  Some even went to McMinn and Traceay who have done over 4000.  The more serious your problem, the more experience is needed.

I hope that helps.  Please keep in touch and let us know what other info you will need.  Here is my list of questions to ask your doctor  http://www.surfacehippy.info/questionsfordoctor.php

Hi

I recently had surgery with a surgeon south of Boston, he also works in Boston.  His name is Dr Lenid Dabuzhsky, he and his staff are great.  If you have any quesions just ask!

sandra

I, too, am looking in Boston.  It seems you have to "meet" with these surgeons to "ask" them how experienced they are in this procedure.  John Ready/BWH, Daniel Snyder (Newton Wellsley), Carl Talmo (Baptist), Dennis Burke (MGH).  Let me know if you meet w/ any of these physicians and what your impression is.

I MET DR JOHN READY OF BRIGHAM AND WOMENS LAST MONTH.   HE GAVE A SEMINAR ON HIP RESURFACING LAST YEAR THAT I WENT TO, ,WHEN I WASN'T READY FOR SURGERY,  NOW I AM AND HE IS ONE I'M CONSIDERING.  I'M SEEEING DR DAN WARD FROM THE BAPTIST TUESDAY EVENING  9/16.   I HAVEN'T CHECKED OUT DR HENRIK MALCHAU FROM MASS GENERAL YET.  AND I HAVE AN APPT WITH DR SNYDER FROM NEWTON/WELLESLEY IN OCT.   THEY ALL DO RESURFACING.   I'LL BE IN TOUCH.    RUSS

Pat Walter

As you gather more information about the MA doctors, let me know.  If you can find out their stats on how many hip resurfaicngs they have done - that would help.

I normally only list doctors that have done at least 100 resurfacings on my list.  I usually learn about the doctors from their patients.

So anyone learning more about the doctors,  I hope you will share the information.

Good Luck in finding a good hip resurfacing surgeon.

I'm looking for a surgeon in the greater Boston area too.  I have appointments soon with Dr. Daniel Snyder (Newton Wellesley) and Dr. Dennis Burke (MGH ....  BTW, it takes about 4 months to get a consult with him... I made my appointment in late June).  I"m hoping to consult with one or two more doctors.  I've definitely made up my mind to have my right hip resurfaced.... just need to find the right doctor.

I met with Dr. Snyder at Newton-Wellesley, Dr. Scott at NE Baptist, and Dr. Malchau at Mass General. Dr. Scott does not do resurfacings and strongly recommends against them. I liked Dr. Malchau and Mass General and scheduled a resurfacing with him in March 2009.

I am now day +10 after a HR with Dr Snider of Newton Wellesley.  A great experience so far.  I went with Dr Snider because I have had two previous surgeries with him, both with great results.  I believe he's doing mostly HR now (I was 1st of 5 on 12/29) so it may take awhile to get in to see him.  Start on the process early.

you must have been in Newton-Wellesley the same time I was - I had my right hip done by Dr. Hanmer (associate of Dr. Snider) on the 31st.  I thought the staff and the experience was a positive one (as much as surgery can be anyway). I was told by the PT at N-W they've done well over 800 BHR there now.

I had BHR surgery with Dr Snyder in 2007.  He never told me how he performed his surgery.  I knew he trained with MR McMinn so I assumed he performed them his way.  Well he broke my trocanter to save cutting through my muscle.  In the end, it has not been as successful as I had hoped.  After the surgery, he never told me he broke my trocanter, but told me I could only do certain rehab.  It took my VNA person to call him to find out what he had done.  I was out of work for 12 weeks due to having another surgery to remove the pin holding my trocanter together.  Actually, it was loose the day after surgery, I kept complaining of pain on my side, sure enough, the pin head had been rubbing all that time.  Which I now believe keeps me from being pain free when I try to do physical things.  Oh well, ask as many questions that you can possibly think of, and then ask more.
RBHR 2007 Snyder NWH,Boston not considered a success.  Still pain 5 yrs post surgery.  Snyder did Ganz procedure. LBHR 2011 Marchand SCH,RI is doing excellent, Marchand did it like it is supposed to be done.

Dr. Snyder at Newton Wellesley would be the only one I would go to in Boston at this point in time. I don't know about any early problems, but I beleieve he has done a few hundred by now (I personally know of 3 successful cases). Dr Burke is unethical, in my experience, in that he intentionally misinformed me about hip resurfacing when I saw him in 2007. I had the same experience with Dr. Bierbaum at New England Baptist. They are all traditional THR and don't want to encourage resurfacing. In 2008, when I had did mine, I travelled to Dr Mont in Baltimore. He is a master in resurfacing with many thousends cases and I have been very happy since with mine. The travel to Baltimore was not all that difficult. Dr Mont would be absolutely my first choice if you can travel. If travel is absolutely out of the question, I would go to Dr Snyder. I personally would steer clear of Baptist and Mass General surgeons.

I have an appointment with Dr. Snyder next month and Dr. Marchand in Rhode Island as well.  Would like a third consult, am considering Dr. Ready/BWH.

I am a runner and want to go with someone who I am most comfortable with.

I had my RBHR with Dr. Snyder and am scheduled to have my left hip done in October with Dr. Marchand in RI.  Seems to be a straight up guy, and have heard good things about him.  Hopefully it will be much much better than my Snyder outcome.  Recently had athroscopic surgery on my right knee in August.  Never thought a fit guy like me would be falling apart so early in life, 52.

Cindy,

A phone call , An X-Ray to Dr Gross is free let him take a look and talk to him, I went after one year of problems what a man. And I thought I was the man . :)  He called me within a week after receiving my x-rays, one of the best in the field, don't end up second guessing yourself like I did, the cost to travel is not an issue to get the job done right.  I hope all goes well, take care,
