I was just reading up  on this anti-flam drug and was wondering if any of you have tried it and what kind of results you are getting?

Thanks.

Tin Soldier

Not sure if this will work, but here is a link to a recent discussion Celebrex.  It came up when we discussed NSAIDs in October.  There's a lot of info in here about it.

I've been eating 200 mg daily of the stuff for at least 5 years now, or ever since they took Vioxx off the market.
It never worked nearly as well for me as Vioxx did but it does help.
I will sometimes swear that it does no good at all when I still feel the aches and pains from my arthritis, but then I'll forget to take it one day and the next day I feel a lot achier. Nothing OTC ever really helped me at all.

Celebrex never worked for me, but Voltaren did.

Celebrex was a godsend for me, and I took it for nearly ten years with no apparent side effects.  The other NSAIDs I tried gave me digestive problems, but Celebrex took the pain away and let me stay active.  When it finally began to lose its power, I was very tempted to double the dose and stay away from the surgery. Given the way my surgery turned out, that might have been a better choice!

It was given to me for a month post op.  Worked great.

I hope it works.  I went off of naproxin as of today due to my upcoming surgery.  Dr. Gross prescribes Celebrex after surgery (2 times a day for two weeks) and suggests talking one tablet daily for six days leading up to surgery (after going off naproxin).  I have not taken it up to this point though.

i love the voltaren cream.  I haven't tried the oral pills.  Naproxin, makes me lose weight for some reason so I can only take it when it gets really bad. Maybe 1 day every 2 weeks.  For example, trying to be nice  helping  friend move a couple weeks ago. That lasted about 10 minutes.. :)

I was almost living on Ibuprofen or Aleve prior to my surgery.  I started with the Celebrex 1 week prior to surgery, and to be honest I was not impressed with how it worked.  However, when my prescription ran out 2 weeks post-op (having taken 2 tablets per day for those 2 weeks as per Dr. Gross's protocol), I really noticed that I wasn't taking it!  I have not taken any anti-inflammatory medicine for 3 weeks now; just the occasional Tylenol.

My overall assessment was that Celebrex does work; I think it takes a little time to get used to it.

I didn't like Celebrex.  Tried it after my first resurfacing, and, I got this weird tingling, disassociation feeling out at the tips of my fingers, like they were restless, needed to be stretched, but I couldn't get them back into my body.  Stopped taking it and my fingers got better right away.  Second resurfacing, didn't take celebrex, didn't miss it.  Not sure what it is supposed to do for you exactly, but, I went without painkillers or anti-inflammatories on my second one, except for Ibuprofin, and I came through fine.  I'm not big on pharmaceuticals, so that's where I'm coming from.

Aerial, funny, I pretty much think? I remember being told to go off all NSAIDs pre surgery because they act as blood thinners too
Dunno, could be I have that all wrong
Oh and Mi C, I hated Celebrex! Voltaren worked well except not on an empty stomache

ZAP thanks for the tip on Voltarin cream, I've never heard of it, but will look for it tomorrow.  I've been using Capzasin for a few weeks, but it burns my skin so bad and leaves it red. Have you tried that?  I heard about it from a friend of mine who's a geriatric nurse.  If any of you are looking for a topical that penetrates really deep and is very strong, you may want to try it.  I'm allergic to almost everything :(

I've got to check out the Celebrex link.  Thank you Tin Soldier !!

I took it, in fact, I still take it for the occasional "not so great day"( not to worry, it is not always my hip that bothers me, lots of other joints ache, too!). I think it works as well as Advil for me, but without the stomach upset and with less risk of ulcers. I am a little concerned about over using it, as it is related to Vioxx and increases your risk of stroke and or cardial vascular problems, so I'm told. Lu

In an earlier post in this thread, someone mentioned stopping the Celebrex that had been prescribed post resurfacing surgery.
With the important caveat that I, like most people on this site, do not have medical training, I think that it might be worth reviewing in this thread why Celebrex is often prescribed post surgery. We all know that Celebrex is not specifically a painkiller, but is an anti-inflamatory. As I understand it, part of that anti-inflamatory process slows or inhibits bone formation. It is often for this purpose that it is sometimes prescribed after joint replacement surgery. One of the complications after hip resurfacing surgery can be heterotrophic bone formation; basically small bits of bone forming in the soft tissue, where they do not belong. Celebrex may be prescribed with the intention of preventing this from happening. Unfortunately, many doctors never explain this, so patients may stop taking it because they do not feel it is helping their pain, when that may not be the reason that their doctor prescribed it. I have heard it argued by some surgeons that they do not want people to take Celebrex right after surgery, because they want to maximize bone ingrowth. However, those that do prescribe it feel that the temporary use of Celebrex is warranted as a means of avoiding potentially serious heterotrophic bone formation that may require additional surgery to clean out.
So, if in doubt, check with your doctor to see what he wants in terms of Celebrex, pre and post surgery, and ask him to explain what role he wants it to play when it is prescribed.

Great post John, my Dr. didn't specify what to take for pain management post surgery (I probably should have asked) but my concern with NSAIDs was the possible inhibiting effect on bone ingrowth. I don't recall which Doc expressed this view but he felt heterotrophic bone formation was not as significant a concern as failure of the prosthetic to bond with the bone. There is also some evidence that inflammation contributes to healing so anti inflammatories may be counterproductive.
